Flat rate for unlimited broadband. You can use the modem in your house and also take it with you and use it while driving, bring it to work etc.....

Hi all, Is this the new wireless network standard IEEE 802.16d, or more commonly know as WIMAX?? If anyone lives in Kent, UK especially around the Canterbury area you might be interested to look here http://www.telabria.com/aboutus/news...es.html#news17

    Think: "Wimax"

Wish it were around here. Would certainly be cool for travel within a city, but not for long road trips unless the ISP provides a large coverage area.

When UMTS and EV-DO roll out then things will get even more exciting

EV-DO is pretty exciting, it'd just be nice if Verizon got off their high-horse and stopped extorting people for it..

I have it on my phone, and it's $15 a month so you can watch crappy video clips (or connect it to your computer and get online while violating the TOS agreement), whereas the data-only stuff with PCMCIA cards is $80 for unlimited broadband speeds.

We have a card in my boss's laptop, and that thing is fast...

Gagaza, looks like you're near Tracy/Manteca area. How's Clearwire in the car? I'm thinking of setting up a computer system (not so decked out like yours though) for entertainment, GPS, and others but wanted some pointers on Clearwire and power supplies. Looks like you use a 750W inverter to supply everything. Do you use this directly from your DC power supply? If so, how to you boot the computer before/after starting the car?

Most importantly, how is Clearwire in the car and its stability? Good enough to use for GPS/surfing and gaming on the road? Do you have to move the antennae between home/car or simply park the car outside the attach a router to the car for in-home access when you're there?

    Great Pics!

Cool, Verizon's service at $80 a month is just too much.

I agree with you that Wireless Internet will take off. Just think how nice it will be to get traffic information, gas prices or internet radio.

montried, So far Modesto, Ripon, and Riverbank have full coverage. Whatever you can do with braodband at home you can do in your car in those cities. GPS doesn't use the internet. Manteca will be live on Sept. 9 and Tracy soon to follow. Driving in the areas that currently have coverage I get PERFECT reception, faster than cable. Having broadband while driving on highway 99 is cool. I'm sure that when Manteca gets it I will have just as good a connection. It's as stable as cable or dsl. I live in Manteca, Work in Tracy, and frequent Modesto, so this coverage is gonna be ideal for me. I'de give Tracy a couple of months though.

I'll get rid of cable internet on Sept. 9. I'll probably get another clearwire modem. Keep one at home and one for the car. I'll definately add a router in the car. If you need a signal on the freeway just drive and stay near me. I plan on always keeping the modem and router on, so when I'm parked, people can use me as a hotspot.

As far as power, go with a dc set-up, more efficient. I went with ac/dc inverters cuz I didn't know about dc power supplies and such. My system works great and is very stable. I think having an isolated second battery probably helped me avoid problems. I have the inverter power buttons and computer buttons mounted on the dash and under the ebrake handle. I like it that I have the option to have the computer on or off even when the car isn't on. The computer system has no way of draining my car battery cuz it's not hooked up to it.

Feel free to ask any question. If you're local, you're welcome to check out my set-up. It might give you ideas on what would and wouldn't work for your build. I think it'll definately inspire after seeing what it can do.
