how bout this amp/antenna/card?

ok, im new at this, still thinking about going with evdo. what I want is an always on (well as 'always' as possible) high speed connection. ive been reading about amps, antennas, and the like on this site. im still a little confused. i want the biggest and best and longest range (up to a few hundred $$ anyway), or evdo. im confused about all this talk of pigtails, arrays, antennas, splitters, etc. What do i need to be able to surf at 55mph? and will this setup give me internet access from one wifi source for the maximum distance or will it attempt to connect to the strongest/closest signal? if it does hop from point to point, is it automatic or can it be made automatic? the setup im looking at is here:

it says "up to" 8 miles. but it is also unclear, b/c the description states: "Normally pulling into a truck stop or other location that serves as a wireless hot spot means that you have to drag your laptop inside to get online. With the WiFi Trucker Kit you can surf the web and check email without even getting out of the cab. The dramatic increase in signal strength this kit offers will allow you to search for even more hotspots and use them from 8 miles away!* ", does this mean i have to park to use it, or will it be mobile?

Should i just go with evdo from verizon? my only problem with that is I will have to go on my mothers acct for the $59.99/month special, or open my own acct w/ an additional qualifying voice plan. forget that. i already have sprint and i'm happy with unlimited vision while tethering. i am also moving to charleston SC in less than a month, and i dont know the legality of her acct having voice calls in MD and data in SC at the same time. besides the fact that it doesnt appear there is any broadband coverage where im moving.

sorry this was so long, just want to weigh my options, and being a newb wanna get it right and POWERFUL on the first attempt.

The product in the link you've provided works on 802.11 technology. There needs to be a useable (and supposedly, legally open) WiFi cloud for this product to work. T-Mobile, among others, has such service through different places (Starbucks is one).

Totally different than EVDO. EVDO works on CDMA cellular network.

Currently, it's quite fair to say that the availability of EVDO is much higher than WiFi. So if you want "always-on" internet, EVDO is probably the better bet. As for the question you have on your moving plan, have you called Verizon's customer service and asked them?

Also check other alternatives; ClearWire probably?

thanks for the info. But i drive down the road with my pocket pc and connect constantly, besides legality, would it work? It will give me access to any open wireless network in its range woouldnt it?
