A few more details would help. Like what you have tried, what is happening when you try to connect etc..
hey,
allready in my house i'm running a linksys wireless g router model wrt54g. i want to put a computer upstairs so i decided to try using an access point that i got for cheap. its a motorola wa840g. i dont know if i missed something or if this just wont work but i cant seem to get it to connect for the life of me. any help would be great. the computer with the access point is running win2000 pro and the one hardwired to the router is running xp if that helps.

when you use the terms access point and router, are you saying that they are 2 different devices?
Do you have some kind of broadband connection going into your router or is the routers only real job to automatically configure all your computers network address?

the router is hooked up to a cable modem. i'm trying to use the acces point as a bridge i guess since i want it to grab signal from the router and give it to my one computer so i can then go online and access files on my main desktop upstairs. i read this works but i guess i'm getting mixed up with setting the ip addresses on each device. the routers main ip is 192.168.1.1 but the ap uses 192.168.40.3 i think it was. i tried setting it to use dhcp but it didnt work so i'm guesing i have to go into each and set a static ip for them. i'll be playing around with it more tonight when i have some free time just wondering if anybody has ideas about what to try.
thanks

A few things to remember.
There can only be one DHCP on a network. If your "access point" can handle DHCP assignments then turn it off and let your router configure.
With that said I would also assign a "Static IP" in your WRT54g configuration page for the access point.
Once these two steps have been completed, log into your access point and make sure that its on the same subnet as your router. (ex. 255.255.255.0) Also change your access point's IP to the same IP you reserved or created as "Static" within your router.
Follow these steps and you should be much closer to your goal!
Progress [I will seriously never be done!]

Why not just put a wireless card onto the second PC rather than an AP.

i chose the access point cause it was only $20 and in the future i plan to use it to hook up my playstation to do online gaming with that.Originally Posted by Curly_cat

like intellaworks mentioned.... in order for the router to allow the access point to access it needs to be in the router's subnet. For example, if the router's IP is 192.168.1.1 then your access point needs to have an IP address of 192.168.1.X (where X is a number between 2 and 254).

I am having a similar issue with a friend's router/AP.
The best bet is to double check your settings.
I found your router: It is very similar to mine.

I could not find your AP, base on that model # though.
Do you have broadcast SSID on?
Do you have any WEP or security measures enabled? You may have to program your AP to accept those.
If you borrow/buy a USB wireless modem, can your tower see the router then?
Do you have Wireless MAC Filtering set to enable? (pg 23)
Have you read pages 24-25 in the manual? It's all about advanced wireless connections.
Guys, does Mike need the AP within the DHCP parameter? ie: DHCP set for 50, with 101-150 being the range. I know I have my DHCP set so my pcs are 101-110, xboxes 111-120 (if I have friends over), then 121-150 for anything else that I might connect to the network. But I haven't messed with APs on it.
to answer your questions LowMileLude
1. yes
2. no i never botherd with security
3. i dont have a usb one but the computer upstairs has a wireless card in it and it works fine..same when i plug the one i'm trying to use the access point on directly into the router.
4. i dont believe i have the mac filtering enabled i'll have to look into that
i e-mailed motorola and they sent me some things to try which i did with no luck so i'll probabily give them a call tomorrow night since i'll have some free time to mess around with this
thanks guys
