Wireless Landline through Merge
Perhaps this has been discussed before, however I couldn't find anything by searching...
While thinking about how I would like to incorporate wireless calling, internet, and carputer based calling I kept thinking my landline was so simple. Well there is a device available for many models of Motorola phones out there called Merge. Essentially in your home it acts as a base charging station. The unique thing is that you plug it into your home phone jack. You can use any of you home phones as your cellphone. I.E. Cellphone rings all your house phones ring. You pick up any house phone and get a dialtone, that can use your cell calling plan. Cool at home if you want to use your free long-distance from your cell plan and switch between landline/cell phone.
Then I thought... Can I put this in my car.... Plug my modem into the P.O.T.S. port on the Merge unit? Thus cheating the system into thinking the dialtone generated by the Merge unit for the cellphone is actually a landline. I was thinking if this were possible then I could use my carputer to place all my calls, via touchscreen. Since amplifying the 1900mhz frequency of my GSM phone is fairly cheap >$300 I could get cell service and dial-up internet just about anywhere. Most of the amps I have seen boast a 35-50db gain.
Anyone ever experimented with the Merge unit? oh ya. From my cell provider they are about $150, however I found them on Ebay for like $35.
