I need a new wifi adapter for the car since my dlink crapped out on me for the second time. I found this post and people seem to be happy with the engenius model. I was wondering though - 362 or 862 model? It will be mounted inside and I have no intention of throwing an external antenna on my car.

    Thanks for the help!

The only difference is that the 862 supports 802.11a/b/g. The 362 support 802.11b/g.
Unless you have the need for 802.11a (which is old and slow), thent he 362 will do you just fine.

whats the farthest range these things can pick with a 7dbi magnetic antenna mounted inside the car?

I'm wondering if it's a big difference mounting the antenna inside car versus outside car.

I have a 7dBi antenna with a big ugly mag mount (it will be a surface mount eventually!) on the roof of my truck. I can pick up access points from as far as a half-mile away, depending on conditions.

I would imagine that there would be a significant reduction in range with the antenna inside the car, simply because the signals would have a ood deal of metal blocking the signal. Basically, it would have to escape through the windows, leaving less of the signal.

Frankly, if you're going to have the antenna inside the car, exchew an external and use the stock antenna. It's pretty damn powerful all by itself.

I just picked up the 362 and loving it. The only problem is the computer won't enter standby sometimes. I reinstalled the drivers from the engenius website and that seemed to work for a while but tonight it started the same thing, the computer goes into standby and then comes out with an error message stating the wlan adapter is preventing it.

    Anyone encounter this?

    I have.

If you're using the WLAN Utility that came with it, don't. Use the Windowz Zero Configuration whatever tool.
I think it's a good idea to mak certain that the power saving options for the WLAN adapter are enabled in order to have it enter standby.

You may need to use devcon & autoIT to turn off that device when entering standby and turn it on when returning from standby.

ok before going into autoit to turn it off, I'll try using windows zero config instead of wlan tool. Any ideas how to ensure I disable the one it came with an d use windows instead?

I uninstalled the WLAN softare completely. I'd say that's some pretty good assurance.

I just got my 362-EXT. Installed it behind the seat, by the rear windshield. Cant catch any channels, given that i havent installed any antenna outside yet, but outside my room, i should be able to catch it in the drive way, my room is right next to it where i have the router. Cant catch the signal any where??? any ideas??

Edit: Nevermind, I reinstalled the software that came with it and now its working. Apparently you cant just use the drivers only installation, i had to install the whole package to get it to work.

Rightaway i picked up about 30 networks, at home i usually pick up around 3 counting mine. So 362 is def good investment. Now i just have to figure out how to make it change networks without me having to do anything.
