Need wireless internet advice / help !
I've been pouring over these forums for the past month or so, and I have gotten a lot of good ideas for equiptment and installation. However, I have yet to find a decent guide to wireless internet.
Here's the delemma:
I need basic wireless internet connectivity for the car. From what I have read here and elsewhere, the free internet through WAP hacks are being shut down by the wireless providers. I don't want to sign a two year contract at $50 per month for wireless internet that I'm not going to use all that often. However, I need a connection that is reasonably quick (at least 56k.) Also, I don't want to get slammed with a bunch of overage charges just because I happen to go to a flash website that eats up my bandwidth.
Here's what I have found through the wireless companies in my area:
Cingular: $59.99 for unlimited, or $20 for 5MB / month and $.008/ KB after that.
Verizon: $59.99 for unlimited access.
T-Mobile: $49.99 for unlimited
Suncom: $5.00 for 5MB / flex fit to $50 max charge for unlimited
So far, Suncom looks like the best deal. It's not very fast, but at least it's cheap and allows me to go where I want and maxes out at $50 if I go over one month.
Cingular's would be great- $20 / month for much faster service- but then I have to monitor my bandwidth very carefully. For instance, let's look at Cingular's charge of $.008 / KB. Let's say I get a few attachments in my email and it costs me an extra 10MB one month. 10MB = 10240 KB * .008 = $81.92, plus the $20 I already paid for the first 5MB = $101.92 (plus taxes & fees). That's just sick.
So, I'm at my wits end here. Is there a way around paying huge fees for wireless internet? $10-$20 seems reasonable, but I can't see spending $60 and being locked into it for two years.
