    Optimized connection to "home"

So I searched but did not really know what terms to search on, and the terms I tried did not return anything useful... perhaps everyone can either point me to an existing package or useful search terms if this has already been covered (not asking to be spoon fed if I missed it). Whew, that was a long disclaimer- as if it will stop the flames, heh...

So I was reading through the forums and contemplating how slow mobile internet is (at least for me in North Carolina, US) and some ways to dance around this issue.

What about a scenario where you establish a TCP (maybe even UDP for a little more speed) connection to your "home" machine, or really any machine that a static IP. Over this connect you could receive compressed text that could then be re-translated into graphics on the car PC. Weather.com is a perfect example. If you had your "home" PC parsing the weather data down to compressed text and pushing that to your car PC, your car PC could decipher it back to a cloud graphic stored on the local hard drive, or a rain cloud, or a sun, etc.

You could conceivably push a LOT of information at once. Of course there are limitations, but there are limitations of mobile internet in general.

Any feedback would be great, not looking to defend the idea, just solicite thoughts.

So... do you mean (a) your home machine would download stuff during the day and then you would periodically sync your carPC to your home machine when it was in range (via 802.11) OR (b) your home machine would download stuff and then turn it right around immediately and send it to your carPC, which would be connected via your cell phone (or whatever) for a sort of "real time" update?

Try doing some searching (google) on setting up a proxy server, I'm sure there's some software solution that has the ability to compress data, though in reality I'm not sure the relative speed increase will be worth the trouble.
