I've seen that amazon link, that's just using the internet as a bridge for the radio (like VOIP), it doesn't let you do any sort of wireless networking so to speak over the radio.... are you saying that's what this other product you saw does? I highly doubt it as those radios are just half-duplex, won't work. The adapter just lets you use the radios over your computer network/internet connection.... which would work for him...but simpler just to use IM/voice chat software.

If you do adhoc networking in the car you'll both at the very least will want to have external wireless antennas to maximize the range....you'll both need to stay relatively close to each other on a road trip.

You'd have to be very close to the other car and stay there to pull it off.
You'd be better of using WiFi, especially with amplified antennas.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

yes bt is defenetely not safe for this. Wifi should leave some time to react...
