i think wardriving is just taking the signals that are broadcasted out (i think this can be disabled by not broadcasting your SSID i believe) and putting them on a map. basically youre just finding sources and how strong those sources of wireless broadcasts are coming from. im sure cell phone tower operators do something similar when trying to figure out whats going on around their towers.

on teh other hand, what you do with those connections is another story. think of it like one of those handheld walkie talkies, you broadcast to a specific channel or id, and most of the time people on the same channel can "see" the source. now if you started talking on it and using it, and nobody cares, then i dont see why not use it. but if the people say hey get off, then you should have the common sense to say okay, and just get off.

if you did get stopped though, i mean really who teh hell has a computer inside tehir car besides you and the cop? you can easily just tell him that you get some sort of satellite internet or something.

another way to think of things... they sell those wifi locator things... is that legal? and hmm.. what exactly would people do when they found a site using the locator? well duh, use their computer to connect. that cant be any worse....

    Correct.

Kismet, Kismac will still see them.

Those are on unliscensed frenquencies. Anybody can talk on them.

Most of the cops I know, know better.

The origional idea behind these things was for people in airports to see if there was wifi available. Was waay easier to use one of the little fob things than break out the laptop only to find nothing.

You're still connecting to a network without the owner's permission. This is a no no in all 50 states. Just because you can see it doesn't mean you can use it. Just because I can see your wife/girlfriend doesn't mean I can use her.

ok, I got a question... wardriving is so last year anyway... doesn't almost everyone have a mobile connection by now?

anyway, my question.... I have a verizon aircard in my car, & it's installed in a kyocerra kr1 wireless router... when my car is running it's it's own mobile hotspot.... I have no security on the kr1.... so now here comes the question....

if I'm sitting at a light, or parked on the corner, & some guy in his house notices my connection & connects, what would that be called? I mean it would suck if I sat outside the supermarket for 15 minutes waiting for my wife to come out, & some malicious hacker happened to get into my network & like lock my frontend so it only plays pat boone.... or johnny mathis....

    hmmmm.........

See that's funny! Might think about some type of encryption. Even 64bit would help. It takes time to crack a 64bit wep key. Not as much as 128, but I don't see you sitting still that long. On a side note, my dad is retireing at the end of the next school year. He already has an aircard. How hard/easy was it to set up your kr1? They are going to be doing quite a bit of RV'ing and I thought that would be a better setup than having to share the card between his and my mom's laptop. It's either that or waiting till they come up here to visit next summer and building them a file server with an older mac laptop and networking the Rv.

just trying to lighten things up around here

the kr1 is an amazing piece... it's prety much a linux box that boots & connects, then maintains & redials if dropped... configuring it was a piece of cake.... I would highly recomend it to anyone who wants to share a wireless connection.... easier than trying to set your own up for sure... & for the $250 or so, it's a great out-of-the-box solution...

That's cool. Too bad no one up here supports cf evdo cards. Would be nice to have an always on connection on my Zaurus.

Actually if I was going to be a dick and actually do that to someone, they'd only get to listen to Celine Dion. Would probably be the only time you actually saw someone purposely light their car on fire.
