My i455 just came , cable should be here tomorrow or the next day.

In case anyone is wondering, got it on ebay from youngjay0 for $55 shipped with 100 minutes. Fast shipping to boot.

Planning on keeping it in the car permanently, wondering what I can do to maximize reception, suppose I could embed it in the rear deck with my other antennas.

The middle one is just TV which I don't really use.

It should be fine. A couple of guys here have them buried behind their dash; for the time being, mine's sitting antenna-down in a seat pocket nowhere near any clear view of the sky.

Something to note... if it can't get a clear GPS fix, it'll report it's location based on the closest cell tower. So you'll still be "somewhat" close.

I suppose you could make a detached antenna if you wanted to. I'm assuming these screw out. I was originally thinking about molding this in some place, but I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to keep it intact for emergencies. I don't mind swapping out antennas real quick though.

Just finished activating, for some reason, couldn't do it online. One thing I noticed is this thing seems to throw off a lot of noise. 4 ft from speakers and if a call comes in or goes out, sounds like a prop plane is hiding in my pc. The speakers are well shielded.

Weird. Hopefully this won't be an issue in the car

Did you get the i455? I don't think it does externally, you have to pop the case. I haven't looked at mine that close.

Yeah, I couldn't either. I THINK I just kept transposing a couple of digits, but once I realized it I was already on the phone with a rep.

Did you ask for the "Wireless Web" service? You'll need it to use the phone as a modem. Though, at least one person here has said they didn't ask for it and it's working fine. I don't think they ever reported back on if they were getting charged for it anyway though.

It's not an issue for me in the truck. It's a "common problem" given the freqs that the service is using. The signaling signal (the data control stuff) from the phone is getting picked up by the amp in the PC (or in the speakers). It's basically heterodyning.

Looking harder, found different pics. Not a screw in, looks (I say looks) like it just plugs in. Whether you have to pop the case, no idea.

I had the numbers right, but still wouldn't let me do it. I suspect it's cause of the wireless access being selected. Probably want you to verify in person about the daily charge (the agent I spoke to asked me repeatedly if I was sure I wanted it)

Weird that none of my other cell/wireless devices caused interference. Maybe due to coverage it has to boost the power to get a good signal. Either way, not worried about it unless it's a problem in the car. Hopefully not.

Can't wait for my damn cable.

I have my cellphone all the way into the back of the trunk on a 12 foot extension USB cable. I am hoping that this reduces the noise you mentioned, because that irritated me the first time I used it.

Its a good thing it doesn't have a whole lot it needs to say to report its location or get the weather.

I'll grab the spare battery too, or maybe make it parallel with each other so it have longer battery life.
    I just tripped over this:

Given a 2400ma capacity for $20, it's a decent alternative to a separate battery. This would also let you leave the phone powered up.

SIDE NOTE: As we're all plugging things into USB ports on our car PCs - keep in mind that at some point you'll exceed the power limits of the port. At that point, you'll need to move to a powered hub. This past weekend I took a D-Link 7-port hub and wired it up to the 5 volt feed on my Opus supply. It helped a couple of issues I was having with USB devices falling out of Windows from time-to-time.

I am not going to feed the phone with power from car battery for 24 hours.
It will be charged when the car is on.
I've gotten about 5 hours with it set to 1 minute intervals. This is with a Motorola i455.

Dumb question probably, does the usb cable charge it or do I need to make a little regulator?
