WHY! Its going SLOW AGAIN!

Before I had a problem with the linksys USB wifi adapter going slow. I bought th Wireless-G PCI Adapter (WMP54G) and it was going pretty strong for a few days. Today I was trying to sync my files and it went really fast for about 20 seconds and just slowed to a crawl! When I restart the PC and try again it goes fast for about 20 seconds and just slows to a crawl. It never used to do this.

Anyone know whats up? My router is BEFW1154 802.11B wireless router.

What type of files are you transferring?? File size will cause speed changes.

Files are about 30-60 megs each.

Oh yea they are AVI/MPG/WMV files.

Do you have any other traffic on the network when you are transferring files?? Microwave running? Neighbor's microwave running? Cordless phone? It sounds like you are getting collisions on the network, and it is having to retransmit packets.

Also sounds like your loosing your neighborstate. Could be numerous 'Hi' 'Hellos' on line. Your router and machine keep saying HI and HELLO to eachoter to keep the connection alive. Check your settings and make sure that all are kosher and your actually passing through the right path. Also see if there are any 'auto updates' or something that the router could be going of on a tangent and doing on its own. Firmware upgrades or something. And of course, check for other computers on the net.

I unplugged the other two computers on my network, switched to channel 11 and checked to see if there is anything. So far it actually seems to be working now. Im assuming one of the computers may have a virus or something running thats killing the network. There are about 3 other networks near by it might also be that.

Update again:

Ok no go on it. I starts at around 32KB and just slows to a stop I disconnected every computer on the network no cordless phone is being used no microwave either. I tried channel 1 and 11.

Look, i am no expert but i had this same problem within my own home. you might have to reset your router. usally there is a button on the back of the router. bam it should be fixed, or maybe you have a bad router, or you might want to download the new firmware for it.

Yeah, what ILukester said. As a general rule of thumb, you should try to reset your router and modem first. You shouldn't even have to 'hard' reset it (pushing that little button in). Try first, just power cycling it. ie....unplug it for 1 solid minute. Plug it back in.

If that doesn't work, you may just want to upgrade your router to the linksys G version. Your PCI wmp54g card is backwards compatible with your B router, but that may still cause issues. Regardless, because of your router, you'll only have 11 mps max transfer.

You could try upgrading the firmware in your router, and (obviously) make sure you're using the latest drivers for your PCI card. $5 says that power cycling your router and modem fixes the issue.
