    wireless router inside car?

i was wondering if anyone has installed a wireless router (access point? im not really sure of the difference) inside their car.

im planning on getting verizon broadband for my carputer in the near future, and since everyone and their mother has a wifi-enabled laptop these days, i would like to make this internet available to my passengers as well.

are there any threads about attempting something like this?
    carputer - done.

I'm sure someone has done this before. Here is the issue, the Verizon card is only going to provide access to the computer it is connected to. Instead of a router, you will need that PC to use Internet Connection Sharing. Then your passengers will connect to your PC via wireless ad-hoc. Should work...

EDIT: The difference between a router and access point is a router will issue IP addresses to clients connected to it and an Access Point will provide a wireless connection to a network, but has no IP addressing capabilities. Hope that helps.

There are wifi routers with a pcmcia card slot that allows just this. They cost $300 or so though. Look up stompbox, Junxion Box, Kyocera KR1.
    Failure is not an option....

It's installed by default on every version of Windows.

well i dont have a pcmcia slot, and i do have an ethernet port that im (obviously) not using....

edit: you mean that the router would get internet access through the pcmcia slot, and my computer would access it through ethernet?
    carputer - done.

Expensive/easy solution is to use one of the those new routers meant to share a cellular pc card internet.

Or use window's internet connection sharing or a software solution like Nat32 and then using a router or access point connected to the carputer's network card as it's internet source. Windows networking is a pain so it'll probably take some tweaking and playing around with to get it to work reliably.

I use verizons evdo service... I have the pc5220 ..... it was the first evdo card that came out from verizon, before that I had an aircard 555 verizon with there 1xrtt express network, even that was so much better than not having anything....

I love it & would never want to not have it.... internet.... anytime, anywhere... I'm glad it came down from the $79.99 it used to be, but it was worth every penny, even back then I think.... I also have a treo 700w with evdo, I always figured I could use this if I'm ever away from the car, but for some strange reason the pc card just works so much better than the 700w & is a better connection.... I've used it both ways, through the cell & through the pc card.... if you use internet allot it's nice to have the seperate card.. I find myself using both at the same time plenty of times

the kr1 just makes it that much better, I used to have to remove the card from the carpc to connect my laptop, even if I had the laptop in the car..... now, the kr1 connects & make my car a mobile hotspot whenever running, while freeing up my pc slot in the carputer.... I sometimes visit my sister, & while the kids are playing & the women are yapping, I just remote start the car, & then browse the net with my laptop in my sisters house(she has no internet ), while the car is outside running & providing a hotspot...

it's usually pretty quick connection wise... it does seem to be a bit slower sometimes at like peak times, but for the most part really great...

I have had one issue with the card though, sometimes infrequently it will dial & connect, show a connection, but not have any data throughput... I used to just disconnect & reconnect, but now that it's parked in the router I have to reboot the router to restablish a new connection... I don't know if this is a service issue or a hardware issue... sometimes it is a little annoying but it doesn't happen to often...
