Automatic connection to unknown Wifi net
According to this excellent article http://compnetworking.about.com/od/w...aticwifixp.htm WinXP SP2 can be configured to automatically connect to 802.11 Access Points that are open.
It will choose preferred Wifi nets first, but then it will connect to any available and _then_ it will try the dial up connection via BT connected phone if present.
This is exactly what I want, because I want to use GooPs (http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/user-innovations/68799-goops-real-time-gps-tracking-and-navigation-for-google-earth-version-2-5-13-released.html) as tracking software to find my car when stolen and for my mother to see how far I've got when coming to see her. She lives 320km's away. And I do not think a thief will bother to connect to passing thru hotspots.
If "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" can be checked you're there, but I cannot do this with my Actisys WLan adapter.
Has anyone done this, or have an 802.11 USB adapter that uses microsoft network configuration?
Most greatful for any info.
