my cheapy hawkings USB adapter allows me to choose to use it's software or the ms wireless zero software.
According to this excellent article http://compnetworking.about.com/od/w...aticwifixp.htm WinXP SP2 can be configured to automatically connect to 802.11 Access Points that are open.
It will choose preferred Wifi nets first, but then it will connect to any available and _then_ it will try the dial up connection via BT connected phone if present.
This is exactly what I want, because I want to use GooPs (GooPs Real-time GPS Tracking and Navigation for Google Earth -Version 2.5.13 Released) as tracking software to find my car when stolen and for my mother to see how far I've got when coming to see her. She lives 320km's away. And I do not think a thief will bother to connect to passing thru hotspots.
If "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" can be checked you're there, but I cannot do this with my Actisys WLan adapter.
Has anyone done this, or have an 802.11 USB adapter that uses microsoft network configuration?
Most greatful for any info.

Thanks trdvibe!
I will try to get my actisys working one last time tomorrow and if no success get me a Hawking. I found them on the web and I did like the external antenna too :-)

also, try a linksys. that may work too.I know i have been able to turn off their network software for customers.
? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys ? Additional hardware ?
he he. that's the router my IT guy is working on setting up for me.we've got a few of those out in the field. very cool indeed. but i was actually thinking of a usb linksys dongle not the router. and btw, if you ever find a wRT54G vers 4, buy it! the software won't work on the ver 5 and newer.

glad you got it figured out, but I don't really think i helped other than add my commentary. LOL
So how did u finnaly get it to work? I plan on doing this soon w/ my wifi dongle. How do you plan on tracking if it gets stolen? I want to do these things ur planning :P
Well, I played around with it until it finally worked. "Installation by accident".
More info at http://web.comhem.se/bengt-olof.swing/network.htm. (Could be improved, I know)
I will use GooPs as mentioned (see link above. read from page 18), and I will let the pc boot every time the car starts. GooPs will start as I've put it in start-program-start, and GooPs will upload position every 10s. google maps or google earth will then let you track your car like this http://maps.google.com/maps?&q=http:...rack/Mulle.txt
Once it is working no maintenance is required.
In Sweden this type of system (or private garage) is the only way to get a better insurance. Immobilizer/alarms does not make a difference.
Good luck
