Software based vs. hard based scanner.

I am debating whether or not to install a real scanner unit, or incorporate a software based one that runs from a PCI slot.

The real scanner would be a Uniden BC785d scanner.

The software based scanner would be the Winradio.

The main goal here is aesthetics. I already have the Uniden scanner, and if I go with it, I'll be mounting it above the rear view mirror.

    - Edit skin to liking.
    - Get compatible phone for mobilephone.net.
    - Facilitate HVAC control.

I would say at least try the the Uniden unit in the car first to see how it receives and how you like it in the car. I've used amateur radio equipment in my cars and some cars just put out more electrical interference than others, and I would guess that a software solution based on an expansion card in a pc could possibly be a little more sensitive to car noise than a dedicated unit like what you've got.

I've thought about the idea of using a scanner and/or software based radio in my car but I think I'd prefer to have a dedicated unit with hard button controls that'd be a little easier to operate on the road.

That winradio does have a little wider receive range though, but it just depends on what you want to listen to, for public service type radios around town both would be fine.
