    Junkyard visit again:

    Found this:

Pulled it from a 99 or 98 ranger. I'm surprised it's in the condition it's in, there was almost nothing left of that truck and most of these cars get molested by other scavengers, so I considered this a lucky find. It was missing it's knobs, so I pulled these from a 93 taurus (same exact knobs) also in great condition.

Also, my suspicions were correct, the connections are the same, the only one I don't have the same is the power for the illumination. (the small white plug just to the right of middle in the pic below.)
I think i'm going to make another trip down there today to clip the harness for this, and to pull another little piece I saw from a 98 taurus.

If I don't get that harness, I can just cut away the housing for that plug and use small female spade connectors to attach it to this, but that wouldn't be ideal.

Lastly, I picked up the alternate cup holder for my car for a whopping $3.00, if it gets on ebay, they usually sell for about $20 plus shipping, so this is another great deal, good find. I installed it, and it works great, way better looking than anything I would have fabbed up.

For the bezel fab, I just need to cut the holes for the DVD drive, the Pioneer deck, and the HVAC controls, sand and paint and that little section is done. I still need to fill the empty spaces on the dash piece, wrap in vinyl, and then put it all together.

I got an inverter (for the PS2 eventually, and anything else that I might use it for.) and for now I'll be using it to power the ATX power supply, and the usb hub. (it has a usb out specifically for this!) But I hope to get the PSU/SSC very soon.

It's getting closer! I'd love to have this in before I move in november, but that may be stretching it.

Great work so far. I love the bezel. Are you going to try and smooth the entire thing and then spray the entire thing in texture, or just spraythe smooth area you created?

I'm going to smooth the whole thing, but that won't be too bad since I'll be cutting a lot of it out. I did a test on a scrap piece, where I sanded down half of it, and sprayed it. It's hard to tell where the edge of the texture is, but you can tell. I'm very satisfied with the way it's going. I can't wait till it's done and I can get it all going.

Texture sprayed, here's some beauty shots:

Basically, after it was all cut and smooth (the bottom part wasn't completely smooth, just mostly, but the texture spray is a good saviour,) I just sprayed a few light coats as directed and that's what came out. I almost freaked out though when my brother opened the garage door and dust and debris came flying in and started getting in the paint. After it was dry to the touch I lightly brushed off the debris with my finger, and sprayed another light coat. (Phew, I was so about ready to kill him for that.) I didn't cut the DVD drive hole or the defrost switch hole yet. I'm going to try and figure out a more precise way to cut these straight, a hot blade would be nice. Coming along nicely!

i've been throwing around a few ideas for the computer case, and I think I'm going to make it out of mdf. I'm going to match the shape of the side of the sub box, and basically extend the sides to the full width of the trunk. One side will be for the computer, and the other for various chemicals, jumper cables, that kind of stuff... This will be carpetted, and made to match the box so that it looks like one piece. It would be way easier to make all the mounts, cut holes for all the fans, etc. I may want to put this on drawer slides so that I can make the outer shell, and slide the inner shell of the computer in and out, but this would mean a lot more wood. (It'd only be 1/2" or less MDF, so it wouldn't be too bad...) Again, I'm just throwing around ideas.

Also, I got a hot blade from a hobby store and tried to cut out the DVD player hole. The hot blade doesn't stay hot enough for a single cut, only about 1/8" at a time, so it took a while to get the hole cut... well, it wasn't straight, so as I'm making the cut straight I notice that I cut the hole too big. So, I'm going to go back and fill in the extra space and sand everything down. I haven't even started on cutting up and filling in the dash piece yet. That's just gonna depend on my free time and energy. I am also still trying to lock down a method for mounting everything so that it's as anti-theft as possible. I've got a pretty good idea of what I'd want to do, but nothing set in stone yet.

I'm moving here pretty soon, so a lot of my time will be devoted to that, and after the move, there's not really a good workshop space, so I'm gonna have to talk to my brother and see if he'll let me work on this in his garage.

thanks biggy, my philosophy is that it should be made out of one chemical, not 4 like some people do with bondo, fiberglass, etc... your install is different because the piece is solely fiberglass. i'm so eager to get it done, but patience is a virtue and will lead to much better results.

I really like the way that texture came out. Much better than I originally thought it would. Great work! Good to see someone taking their time with this.

I'm glad the texture came out that way too. It seems to do what it says too (bond to the plastic and be chip resistant.)

I've seen way to many bezels and dash pieces rushed and turning out bad, just to be re-done. I'd rather take the time to do it right, than rush it and have to re-do it.

Thanks guys for all the kind words. I'm going to put together something in the fabrication forum about this whole install because some of the methods I'm using can help some newbies out. I still also have to write up the review for the screen... geez, lots of work ahead, but it will be fun!
