Most newer vehicles you can not aim for a headlight with laser as laser requires a direct reflection from a flat surface, most headlight on newer vehicles are not flat or if they are flat they have an angled back this prevents the laser from being effective. They are built like this for that reason it just happens to be that way. So you are still better off getting as close to the most perpendicular (to the road) parts of the vehicle (i.e. the plate and the leading edge of most bumpers.
