2002 VW 1.8T Jetta install with sound system

    UPDATE ADDED PICTURES

Photos 07-07-01 (Click here for all pictures)

It always happened that you begin working on something and you don’t think about some things till you are close to being done. This is the point in my install where I am kicking myself for not taking enough pictures. But there are some and they will be coming in the next couple of days/weeks.

    What I am doing:

Custom build trunk which houses the computer, second battery, 2 diamond amps, 2 12’ diamond subs, and still has room for my camping gear and lets me get to my spare tier. Because Car PC should never get in the way of safety.

The front has a custom inlay into the ashtray for a imon unit, with a knob for volume and a display for what song is playing. The head unit is being removed for a 7 inch touch screen, in a custom fabricated dash peace.

As a side part of this install I also went thought and laid down extra sound proofing, doors, trunk, and floors.

What I want my computer to do:

Naturally, I want it to play music, do GPS, cell phone though phone control, internet thought the cell phone. Nothing to special. Possibly after I get some work done on the engine have the computer display car stats.

I will be using this computer to feed GPS data for a independent study project that I am doing as a CS major at a university. Which should be interesting.

    Where I am at today:

So I didn’t start this work log till I was almost done, done. My car is currently in shambles as I just finished putting it back together from putting in sound proofing. The dash fabrication was finished yesterday when I put the final stray pain layer on the center counsel peace. Hoping to have a functional computer in my car by the end of this coming weekend. The computer has a custom box that mounts in the trunk at the place where a CD changer was supposed to mount. Thank you VW for giving me that nice bracket to mount to. My data wire has been run.

So i had some time today to finish putting in the new screen mounting and finished the dash. Those pictures i will put up tomorrow when it;s sunny out again and possibly after the power wire is run.

You do realize the mistakes you make. This was my first attempt at fabrication, and there were a couple of places where i miscalculated some measurements and i will be doing a 2.0 of the center counsel.

    it work.

Well i did what i set out to do. I ran the new power wire to the trunk. And today for the first time i watched the windows logo appear on my car. not to much later, i was able to some how crash the computer where a simple reboot is not enough and i am guessing i need to go into safe mode.. But work tomorrow awaits and since Wednesday is a holiday, i think i can get a bunch of work done on it. In the mean time. i posed some more pictures to my good photo page here.

the Germans do a damn nice job of the interior of the car, nice lines, clean and simple design. To do any less when you are re-designing it is an insult to VW.

Finally the sound system is up to speed with my car. Installed the new sound card, installed the highs and lows amps and put in the subwoofers.. All that's left is finishing the trunk building. As of right now i have no use of the trunk at all. I will have some pictures of the trunk shortly.

So some things i have learned. In car PC's fans are important. Now was far as the CPU, i have had no problems with heat. The via motherboard ran cool enough and so does the Intel one, but hard drives have issues when they have no air flow. They like to overheat and melt. I will add the melted hard drive pictures later on once i get around to taking the drive out of my car to re-sync the music and do all the fancy album art and stuff like that.

Sound card don't like heat either. And surprisingly they produce a good amount of it.

So i fixed my problem by adding proper air circulation across all of my computer.

    eliminating the buttons?
The buttons for the screen, i don't really use them, i read somewhere that you can set the screen to turn on when the power is given to the screen. So instread of having space for buttons on the dash, i would rather have my cup holders back in use. or use that area for something a bit more useful. Like a DVD drive

moving the dvd to below the screen?
My DVD drive is currently on it's side, and appartly that doesn't go over well when the car is moving. It seems that any kinda of shock protection is based on up and down jump from the cd. So the DVD player is going to be shifted above or below the screen.

when i did my gti, i was about having it clean... you see nothing !
Yep.. that really the way to go, if you have some kinda of work done on the car. If it looks all custom and is noticeable, well some people are assholes and want what they don't have. I am trying to make it look as stock as possible. This way some one walks by the car and doesn't give it a second thought that there might be a bunch of electronics.
