04 Neon SXT Project - PC and Automation

Starting this thread now so it's here. So far, its mostly just plans, but I've begun purchasing the parts... Before I continue though, I know full well that the parts I've chosen aren't the most efficient or cost effective or low wattage, but this is my project and I'm going to do it my way I've already checked into the power consumption issues, and I'll be fine... So, to begin:

    System Plans:
    AMD X2 Brisbane Core BE-2350 (45W) Processor [x]
MSI K9NBPM2-FID NVIDIA Quadro NVS 210S Micro ATX Motherboard [x]
OnBoard Quadro NVS 210S graphics [x]
OnBoard HDA Realtek ALC883 (for now) [x]
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400GB SataII Hard Drive [x] (Ended up with a free Western Digital 400gb sata2)
    1GB DDR2 800 Ram (4 x 256MB) (freebie from a buddy) [x]
PCMCIA to PCI Adapter (for EVDO)
Silverstone FP34-B USB 2.0 Card Reader
    Lilliput 8" 809GL-80NP/C/T touchscreen monitor
Panasonic Slot Load CW-8124 DVD-ROM/CD-RW [x] (ended up with a GoGo external unit, enclosure and drive in 1...will still buy panasonic and enclosure later though, this one has a tray)
Slim drive external USB enclosure [x] (see above)
DSATX DC-DC Power Supply in Dumb Mode(startup/shutdown controller disabled)
Fusion Brain (see "Automation" below) [x]
    HQCT (when they're availble again)
    Digimoto 5.0 OBDII Vehicle Diagnostics

    Audio:
    Majestic 6.5" Coaxial Speakers(doors) [x]
    Majestic 6"x9" Triaxial Speakers(rear deck) [x]
2x Niche Audio Titanium Series 10" Subwoofers [1/2]
    1x Niche Audio NA1280E Evolution Series 4Channel Amp [x]
1x Niche Audio NA1010E Evolution Series 2Channel Amp
Ported Subwoofer Enclosure (35Hz port tune)
    Kicker 3-way Electronic Crossover [x]

    Sound Deadening:
Second Skin Audio Damplifier and Damplifier Pro

    Vehicle Changes:
    SPAL Door Popper Kit
SPAL Power Window Kit(for the rear)
    Shaved Door Handles(pushbutton driver door)
    Shaved Inner Handles
    Window Switches Removed
    Power Mirror Switches Removed
    Servo's added to headlights
Servo's added to manual HVAC controls(heat, vents, circulation)
Photosensor used to activate running lights and headlights at Dusk/Dawn
    Backup Proximity Sensors
    "Push-button" Starter on screen
    RUN/ACC Wiring re-routed(see explanation below)
    more to come...

    Automation:
    Door Locks - 2 outputs, 0 inputs
    Door Poppers - 4 outputs, 0 inputs
    Windows - 8 ourputs, 0 inputs
    Trunk Popper - 1 output, 0 inputs
    Mirrors - 4 outputs, 0 inputs
Headlight aiming system - 4 outputs, 0 inputs
    System Exhaust Fan - 1 output, 1 input(thermometer)
    Automatic Headlights - 1 output, 1 input(Photosensor)
Automatic Climate Control - ? outputs, ? inputs
    Boost Controller - 1 output, 1 input(pressure sensor)
    Backup Proximity - 0 output(graphical display), 1 input(IR proximity)
    Vehicle Information - 0 output(graphical display), ? inputs
    more to come...

I selected the motherboard and processor listed above because it gives me more than plenty of power, while also allowing for upgrading down the road if need be with a PCIE x16 slot and 2 PCI-32bit slots. For the time being, i'll be using the onboard video and sound. The video is the nVidia Quadro NVS 210S w/ nForce 430 southbridge. Audio is High Definition 8channel. If the audio is anything like that in my desktop here, it will be perfectly fine. The PC will be built into the dash, behind where the radio normally would sit.

The door handles both inside and outside will be shaved. Outside driver door handle will be replaced with a single sealed chrome push-button to activate the door popper. Window switches will be removed, as with the mirror adjustment switches(or actually just removed from visibility, inside the door panels), same with the lock switches. The ignition cylinder(key) will eventually be removed, so the computer will control if/when the car can be started. A button will be present on the dash, near the screen. This will be the power button for the PC. Once the computer begins its boot up procedure, the car's RUN and ACC wiring will be activated by relays. Once computer is completely booted up, a password will be required to enter windows. Once in windows, the Fusion Brain software will load automatically. On the first screen, there will be a "START" button which will activate the car's starter. Once the car is parked after driving, shutting down the computer will cause the car to shut off until next time. I am fully aware of the possible problems this setup can cause if the computer happens to crash while driving. I will make provisions to prevent this...so please dont jump to the gun and suggest otherwise

There are also plans for performance enhancements for the car, but that's probably not for this forum...

I will post more as things progress...

    - Matt

    +1

And if you take some good "install tutorial" type photos, we will be glad to host them on our site and show them off to the world as an example. That goes for everyone with a brain!

wouldnt an install like this result in a 30-60 second wait time to start your car while the computer boots up?

yes and no. There are ways to make the initial startup procedure as quickly as possible...first off i'm using a dual core cpu, 1gb ram, and i'll be disabling systems that arent necessary, etc...but i usually fidget around in my car for a couple minutes before starting it and driving anyways

Also boot time shouldn't ever be 60 seconds. 20-30 seconds with a full XP Pro install and optimized BIOS boot sequence is the way to go. If you strip down XP, I am sure it will go even faster. If you have over 45s boot time, I think people need to work on optimizing boot because that is rediculous!

And yes, that is a cold boot. If you do dual batteries in standby, then instant (almost) boot.
