1991 Jeep Cherokee XJ indash install

I may be starting this a bit early, as of right now i haven't even got everything assemblied or tested. but i needed someplace to help me keep track of my project costs and ideas.

The idea originally came from wanting a bigger screen for my Garmin GPS III+. which was, when purchased, the best out there, it was one of the first GPS units to include maps. After researching my options I found that you can't just wire in a bigger screen. BUT you can interface it with a computer. Hmm? ok how do i do that? then i found this site. And the rest is as follows.

Case: Mobile Computing Solutions Read the review here.
    Power Supply: M2-ATX
    Motherboard: Jetway J7F2WE2G 2.0Ghz
    Memory: Crucial 1GB 533 DDR2
Hard Drive: Seagate Momentus 7200.1 80GB
Monitor: Dynamix 8" widescreen (yeah i know i went cheap)

That's all i have for now. I will post more pictures and specs as they are recieved.

As far as the install, no. I have had a few billion more ideas and some progress on fully integrating the system into the jeep.

I haven't really outlined my goals for this project yet and will try and update this thread with the full details soon. I'll give you a quick rundown albeit not complete list.

Since this is an Off road vehicle i do want to control the all the lights including the 10 auxiliary lights mounting around the Jeep. I have an on board air compressor, that will be controlled too. I am also very determined on getting steering wheel controls working, and have been playing with that part on my spare time. As you are aware the XJ's don't have good steering wheels for adding switches, so i am looking into swapping in a newer 95-65 column and using the space for the airbag for the wiring and USB hub.

I am thinking about using the computer to also control the HVAC as well but here's my delima. As of right now the computer crashes at times when playing audio. It mainly happens when using Roadrunner, but it also crashes using the demo of Centrafuse. Both systems use completely different Programs for audio playback, so I'm still investigating whether it's a hardware software issue. I'm leaning towards hardware and may start swapping out parts soon.

Anyway this crashing has got me worried about using it for a system such as HVAC, I DO go offroad in this and will continue to do so after the computer is installed. When your on the top of the ridge plowing through fresh snow or in a nasty downpour and can't use the heat or defrost, it could be life threatening.

Sorry this was so long, but if you have any other questions about the jeep or install feel free to ask.

Well, I am not planning to do all of that with mine. Just navigation, media, and a couple of other odds, and ends. I already have a USGlobalsat BR-350 GPS antenna, and Antenex 2.4 GHz antenna mounted in the roof since I already had the headliner out. So far that is all... Not much progress, huh? LOL

    Any recent progress?

I also have a '91 Jeep XJ Cherokee. You are slightly harder core than me in your offroad adventures (Lack of HVAC in my case may mean discomfort, but certainly not death). That being said, the thought to control the HVAC through the computer is certainly on my wishlist.
Therefore, I ask if you have made any recent advancements? What are your thoughts on how to control the HVAC specifically? I had considered servos, the likes that can be found at hobby stores for remote controlled airplains, but hadn't thourally investigated how the controls actually work.
Also, how are you considering mounting your screen? I had considered a fold out screen, but there's that pesky overhang at the top of the dash that requires some extra thought...
