You know, that's a good point. I guess all the Bluetooth headset is going to tell me is whether the system is pushing out sound at all. It isn't going to tell me if the audio jack is alive.

I'd better dig up any headset I can find that runs a 3.5mm jack. I'll look around . . .

Or you can run to a dollar store and pick a set up for $1... That is, if you've got one nearby. I'd have to go 35 miles to get to one, but that's just an excuse to get out of dodge for me...

It was just a case of brain fade -- I wasn't thinking about what I was trying to accomplish as much as I was concentrating on figuring out where I'd get a headset, and a Bluetooth headset was all I had. I let that idea go.

First, I tried the iPod in the head unit, and it worked fine. Then I tried a set of battery-powered speakers I'd brought along; I plugged them into the PC, and they worked, a little, whereas they work fine on the laptop. It looks to me like I need that preamp in the system to get the sound volume up.

So your having sound issue from the PC to the headunit? If you want I have a 150 watt Amp laying around. It was originally for my install, but since I am using one of the Alpine Amps instead, I dont really have any use for it.

    Hmmmm -- I'll PM you . . .

    Bluetooth Failure on Boot

I think I need a new Bluetooth adapter. The one I'm using is a cheapo, and it isn't recognized at startup. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it's recognized immediately. Back at home, I have an HP adapter, and I'll give that a try. While I'm on the road, I'll just have to plug this one into a hub after startup.

    Lotsa USB Ports
Despite the temporary lack of music capability in the carPC, I have tunes, because I brought an old iPod Nano along to play through the head unit. I can use a USB port to keep it charged while it plays.

I know I'll have a USB port available, no matter what. With the little 4-port hub eventually intended for cameras, and the 7-port hub for miscellaneous use, I have 11 powered USB ports available in the cabin. For a car that generally has only one occupant, that may be a bit of overkill.

Now be very careful with USB cameras. They will suck all the power and the hub will not power on. It may do so when external power is added though.

HAHHAHAHAHA, that actually is overkill, thats more then me. Each seat has 2 ports, but only one goes to the main system, so that six user ports, then the other six go to the personal computers. All other ports have devices, but are hidden and cannot be accessed.

    So Many Computers

This has been another trip where I have plenty of computing power along. In addition to the carPC, I have my laptop from work, the EeePC netbook as a nav backup, and the 32GB iPhone 3GS for commo and as a backup to the backup. PC systems have shrunk in size so much that everything fits easily in a backpack.

I was going to bring a bunch of tools along and build dash parts, but decided to leave the tools home. I've been online with my office working remotely, and I'm enjoying the rest of the time with my family. I only get up here a couple of times a year to see them; Mom is 91, and time with her is priority. She's still interesting and very much a fun character; I don't want to miss out on time with her because I'm playing with car parts -- they'll wait for me.

    Thermostatically-Controlled Chassis Fans

One of the many good things that came out of turning the mainboard around in the chassis is that I can make changes much more easily, because I can reach all the connections by just lifting the screen.

The first change I want to make is to reduce the use of the chassis fans, particularly when the dash is cool. Right now, the chassis fans are madly blasting away, even when the carPC is idle. That means extra noise plus increased -- and unnecessary -- use of auxiliary battery power, which translates to a shorter run-time on battery power.

Since the fans are powered through an easy-to-reach 12V plug that attaches to the drive power system, I can put in any kind of control mechanism that I'd like.

The one that interests me most is a thermostat, so their speed is relative to the amount of heat they need to dissipate. That will save power in the auxiliary batteries when the ignition is off.

I mentioned that to Josh, and he thought about about it briefly, then walked out into the garage and pointed out a thermostat on a vent fan we aren't using. It was wired into a 110V fan, but there were no electronics controlling it. It's a plain, mechanical thermostat with a knob that controls the set point; it turns on when the temperature of the thermostat rises to whatever set point we choose.

This is just an off/on thermostat. I'll try it out, with an eye to replacing it later with a variable-speed control that makes the fans spin faster as the temperature rises. With a little luck, they'll never have to turn very fast.

OHH WOW, you have guts, lol. I tried the fan control on the mobo and just felt so uncomfortable. I dont think the fans draw that much power, do they? As far as quietness, it wont ever be quiet because you'll be doing something that is making noise. It could just be that the AMD was just retarded, but when I used the thermostate built in, the PC was always over heating. My rear hatch that I am building has huge fans, the opening is about as big as a compact disc.
