    02 Volvo S60 install

After buying an Intel D201GLY2A just before xmas, my PC location options expanded (the old mobo was too big to go anywhere sensible).

I decided on the pocket on the left of the boot which seems a common place for these cars.

I wanted it to be removable and non permanent. So cutting holes for boxes is a no no.

I started with making a fibreglass box

In between layers I put some mesh to stop the wigglies. FG doesnt like sticking to mesh that much which caused a few probs. Added some brackets

Once that was sorted I cut some 5mm perspex to size.

Then I lined the box with some black fleecey nicestuff.

The perspex was sprayed from behind with the same colour as the screen mount, a similar colour to the dash.
Then I fitted connectors to the side panel so the whole unit can be removed easily.

(L to R: Screw, 6 pin connector for audio, 2 RCAs, 4 USBs, monitor, connector for power switch, screw, 4 pin connector for power and remote fly)

Added some spaghetti. Cable wrap is UV reactive. Will be fitting some UV LEDs in at some point.

Mobo is mounted on a same sized perspex sheet with some blue LEDs mounted in a hole in the middle to light the perspex edge.
Slung under that is the soundcard. The whole lot is mounted on a painted metal baseplate which in turn is mounted to the base of the box.
    M2 fixed to baseplate.
HDD is mounted on the side of the box.

All together. Box has hook velcro on the back to stick to the carpet of the panel. Seems pretty firm.

    It works!

Due to a fkup the fan grille I got was the wrong size so waiting for a new one.

    Screen (Lilli 8" WS)

Needs another coat of paint. The bezel is all even, its just the flash/reflection that makes it look like the bottom right is wonk.

Fitting the screen centrally was not easy but I dont want the offset that most S60 carPCs have.

I managed to locate a cheap head unit off ebay (most go for several hundred quid despite the fact they are matched to the car and will not work in a different vehicle). It came with the mounting bracket and the left hand coin pocket too which was damn useful.

I gutted it and attacked the front of the cage with the dremmel to create space for the screen.

Bezel was standard fare. Cut screen bezel to bare minimum, cut headunit bezel to fit screen bezel, bond together, drape with lycra and cover with resin.

    EDIT:
For those that care, I have the Premium stereo pack so am keeping the Volvo amp. I have made a cable that connects to the original HU wiring (6pin DIN) which goes straight to the amp. The centre speaker was amplified from within the old headunit, so for now I will run without but once it is all installed and running I will add a second amp for a sub and run the centre off that too (or maybe a small third amp).
I used the aerial plug from the old head unit and wired it onto the aerial lead of a Silabs radio unit (Volvos have a 2 wire diversity aerial with a stupid connector).

    More later...

Not fixed in yet hence the big lip underneath.

Has some groundloop/whine issues and a few other audio probs which are being sorted.

Nice install, are there any pics of the construction?
Am I the only one who went for the centralised option?

Zero: If you are in the UK I may be selling mine

I just worked around the aftermarket stereo bezel that Volvo provides with the least modification I could get away with. Paint matching was a PITA. I couldn't begin to do the total fab work you've done. I'm so jealous of the slick PC mount you did. If you're selling the car are you selling that too? ;p

Sorry can't find many pics of the work in progress. I completed this back in 2005 and have since only added a rear screen and updated the MB and changed the boot drive out to a 32GB SSD drive.

Hey guys, I sent baj a pm about this, but figured if either of you responded here it would make it accessible to everyone. What did it take to hook up the Stereo out from the PC to the factory amp and avoid the noise issues? Just cut out the center channel and split the right and left channels to both front and back of each side?

No trickery with input on the amp being at some crazy offset voltage or anything?
