Basic Computer Components

Main Board
AValue finally got my board back to me last week. It is a ECM 5710. This single board computer has a PCI slot, dual ethernet, VGA/TV/LVDS out, and 4 serial ports. I mention these in particular because i intend to make good use of these parts. What it doesn't have, that would have made it perfect, was PC104. It will be running a P4 Mobile 1.6Ghz and 1GB of RAM, which is the board's max.

Screen
I have a motorized in dash touch screen somewhere that i will be using. Its the standard 7" stuff that a bunch of people have.

Input
Keyboard and mouse by gyration. Nothing better. Primary driver input will either by by a ShuttleXpress or a Spacenagivator. I haven't decided because while the shuttleXpress is big, it is completely programmable and has 5 buttons. The petite size of the Spacenagivator and the way it controls is what has me interested in it. Ofcourse, there is touchscreen. Yay touchscreen!

Sound
Not much has changed in this department since my Infiniti.

Speakers
I dont' know how accurate this info is, but this car has a LOT if speakers
* Front: 3-1/2", 6-1/2"
* Rear: 5-1/4", 6" x 9"
* Dash: 3-1/2"
* Front door: 6-1/2"
* Back door: 5-1/4"
* Rear deck: 6" x 9"

I have a set of 63.5i Infinity Kappas that are going in the front. Depending on what else i get will determine what goes where else. Probably will be 6x9's or another set of 6.5's.

So i completely failed in getting the system in before the end of spring break. Thanks a lot TORX SCREWS!!!! I will be getting the right sized drivers later on today. Maybe, just MAYBE i will get it all done...pics will be up later. Then it will be off to turbocad for a tuning.

I also learned a trick today. Power wire from Home Depot costs SO MUCH less and is the exact same thing. Well..not really. its not as flexible and the copper strands are MUCH thicker, but it gets power there, right? I got like 10 feet of wire, 4 and 8 gauge for $6. I'm going back to get my ground wire in the morning. I might just do my Big Three when i'm done.

I am looking for some Infinity Kappa 6x9s for the rear. I saw some on ebay for like $47 shipped, but its missing a tweeter. maybe i should just do Reference Series and be done with it? Or just get whatever 6x9's i can find?

My carputer refuses to turn on AGAIN. Its like they fixed NOTHING. bah. I'll see what i can do. this is a PITA. I think i will just run everything off my pocket PC for now and then switch to FULL OUT CAR PC for later.

That's like a good $140 ave, $100 min. Just dropped $60 on audio...bah.

so, i've decided that swedes know how to build cars, they just don't want you messing with them when they are done.

FINALLY got mostly through the install, when i hit the speakers. I went through my entire allen key set to find out that it isn't hexed...its RIVITTED. So after playing for a bit with that, i finally gave up. In fact, i played with it for so long, my battery is dead. So here i sit, in my car, in an awkward position where i can't possibly be jumped.

Also, to run wire through their car, you need 6 different sizes of the same tools because of their weird orientations they want you to get in. Things are hidden in all sorts of clever ways, like metal studs you have to contort in order to remove parts, that if you weren't smart enough to figure, hey...this must be a snap, you would spend hours on.









To top it off, they also put the battery as FAR from the only hole you can squeeze power wire through as they possibly could. I kid you not. It's like they just WANT to **** you off. You won't win, Sweden. You won't win.

haha, its literally a month later! I guess its time to update

I spent the last month;'s free time helping out at my mom's restaurant, which left little time for the carputer. Mom left for trinidad on tuesday, so guess what i spent the last two days on. yup. That and Battle field 2. that game is addicting

Lots of drilling, cutting, slicing, prying, ripping, and tearing happened. At this point in time, after about a month, tonight i heard the sweet sounds of success as i blasted some KJ-52 and DC Talk out of my pocket PC and through my kappas.

That much being said, i am NOT, i repeat, NOT doing my rears until i get substantially more funds AND a good chunk of free time.

Thus far, my pocket pc will suffice as my carputer UNTIL i figure out what i'm doing wrong on my ECM 5710V. i bout a new processor , and just got some new ram, so we'll see. Who knows, maybe this will be short lived?

In the mean time, i have a modified docking cradle with VGA out and RS-232 serial. yes, the axim can do all that. I had 500+ views, over 4 posts. I'm really sorry i havne't been around. busy busy. summer's almost here. though. I can't wait...

Also, i got my HD radio. Yay! It sounds great. Still kinda sour that lost reception got it for half the price i did, but can you blame me, i mean, he saved a whole $20 over me. Shoot, that was that cable form mitch. oh, that treminds me, Mitch also sent me the cable for it (i paid him, no freebies) YAY! I'm all prepped up

I ended up easing some of my pain by actually going to home depot and buying a few tools. they actually know me by name there now. The wiring guy and the hot chick who does tools, but got transfered to bathrooms says hi to me all the tiem. A cashier thought i worked there and almost gave me an employee discount lol.

Speaker wise- my rears are 5.25, NOT 6x9, which has made me REALLY happy that i hadn't won any of the auctions, mostly cause i overslept. God works in mysterious ways.

I would get more shots, but i lost my camera. I bought another on, a Canon G3, which will be delivered tomorrow, so i'll get shots then.

Comptuer
As for the computer, its still giving me trouble. I just bought another processor, a 1.8 ghz P4, but it still won't boot to bios. Avalue says they got it to work after they got it back form taiwan. I'm hoping that its the ram or something. If it is, then that means that my 1.6ghz P4-M may work and then i'll have power to spare.

On the plus, i also picked up 2 power supplies along with that RAM. 1 is an Opus 120W, which will power my system, and the other is a 15W PSU, which will power the night vision cameras. Oh you thought i forgot about them, didn't you? heh heh heh... Still going ahead with that. I have been playing with my pocket PC and IGuidance using the reflection. I think i have it down to what i need. the only problem is that i may need to write my own graphics adapter OR pre-reflect the image using a mirror so that it shows up correctly on the windshield. Yes, i don't know what i can do to make it show right. See, a simple invesion along the Y axis won't gut it. Its got to be a solid MIRRORING, like the reverse lettering on the ambulances so that you can read what it says in your rear view mirror, That seems to be the key to this whole thing. I do like hte ample amount of room i have on my dash and gauge cowel though



Finally, since i ripped out hte antenna, i have a few extra switches on my dash that do sqaut. I wonder....what could i do with them...

we'll find out later.

Back to tuning my speakers!

So in the middle of doing the final touches. Still has that mystery problem, BUT, there's no amp whine and only the left speaker is making any hissing. interesting indeed.

Sadly i think my Pocket PC was too close to the speaker as it is giving me this weird error. could just be the battery screwing up.

Shots will be posted later today from my new Canon G3 camera. I love it, its so much better than my other ones. I mean, geez, you press the button and it IMMEDIATELY takes the picture. that is what i've been looking for!

So here are a few more shots.. The orignal volvo speaker hole was way too small, so i had to buy a $20 metal cutter to do the job. Needless to say, since no one would be seeing this, i couldn't give a crap how it looked as long as the damn speaker fit. It took 2 days, but yeah,





Took a knife to the rubber groments. I'm telling you, the swiss don't want you touching their cars lol.

I also had to drill new holes. Then i went to Home Depot and bought some washers and some 8-32 x 3/4" screws. It was almost a perfect choice, and i thank my last job for teaching me so much about screws. No, not SCREWING RAF, screws. I don't work where you do





I will add grills soon.

ANd here is the Mess-o-wires. I'll clean it up, but i'm letting everything sit for a bit as the adhesive is setting. THe EQ isn't installed yet, but will be when i go for a good tuning. I still have to figure out a few things.





All done. yes that lotion on the floor. You do NOT want anything but really moist and soft skin when dealing with sharp shards of metal sticking out every which way. Yeah, i stuck my whole hand in that hole without any protection on but lotion. It's a great lube for many things. Not THOSE THINGS....



That switch all the way to the right has absolutely no use. That will change soon. I think i will attach the night vision to that. . yes, that is my GPS on there in that tray. BT baby!

Problems seen thus far

I'll need an audio switched. I can't run the HD radio through the mic of my pocket PC and then have everything form m speakers come out The best thing is just get a $5-$10 audio switched and mount it somewhere.

Another problem is that the HD radio has no volume controls. This is a light problem and needs to be addressed ASAP. Radios need things like volume controls lol.

Mounting the axim is also going to be an issue. Even though the cradle can be secured, the axim will not be secured in the cradle. i may have to fenangle something for the interim.

Still to go:

• getting th ECM 5710V to turn on
• Audio switcher until the above happens
• NEATLY routing those wires
• Setting up the Axim Dock.
• Removing the old stereo head unit
• Volume knob.
