The Wolf - Volvo 480 Turbo

Ok... Well time to start an install thread. In vain hopes that it will help
me keep making progress...!

(this is going to get a bit picture intensive... apologies!)

First off.. The car -

I've just SORN'd the Jag.. So work on getting 'the wolf' going has to accelerate!

She's LPG'd so cheap to run... but right now I can't afford to insure both
and I can't be doing with insuring it for just a few months.. so when it ran out
at end of Feb she got parked up. Good job I can walk to work!

But.. Back on 'the wolf'.....

We lovingly refer to the lil red car as 'the wolf' because I had to de-badge it
to stop people keep trying to buy it! Now they don't know if it is an ES or a Turbo
so they leave me alone. (wolf in sheeps clothing. This thing is chipped and puts
out 170bhp!)

Dodgy 'sideways' shot of the interior. I've swapped this out now for a 'half leather'
interior.

Only cost me £30!

Getting a bit of a nose job.

This car cost me £100 and came with a suspected failed gearbox. Boy did it make
nasty noises! So off it came...

And the source of the nasty noise turned out to be cheaper than a new gearbox!

So... Attention turns to the PC install (Thats what yr waiting for afterall)

Heres a pic of the dash...

Note the 3 guages, heater controls and empty din slot on the left hand side.
Screen will take up the din and the guages have to be relocated.

Thing is I didnt want the boooost guage to be moved down to the lower cubby
I wanted it to still be easily visible.
So I had a look at the clock. Reasoning that I won't need it once the PC is in
it seemed a perfect place to put the booooost guage.

I gutted a clock, sliced up the 3 guages to seperate off the booost guage...

and frankensteined the clock into a boost guage.
(a spare clock shown for comparison)

Fit's in the original clock location (obviously)

so now time to sort out a way to mount the 7" LinITX screen....

I have 193mmx110mm to play with so the original screen case wasn't going to fit
without having it's buttons lopped off. Luckily we have a laser cutter at work..
so....

Hot off the laser cutter, new screen surround.

Fit's quite nicely

(yeah I know.. slight macro problem with that pic.. sorry!)

Screen attached to the new surround, with mounting 'ears' added to the frame.

And of course it just 'has' to be FreeICE. It's been the easiest FE to get doing
all the stuff I need so far!

** to come **

Mounting the lapdog in the boot
Mounting the 4Chl Amp in boot.
Mounting screen frame into the dash.
Figuring out how to put 'Thelma' into the volvo
(The TrafficMaster from my old 'scrapped' Vectra 2.0L SRi
I miss her dulcet tones!)
And the wifey just got me this for my birthday (and I didn't
ask for it, was a surprise:

I think I will actually put it in the car and wire the TrafficMaster
through it...

and... errr... loads of other stuff (including pads n disks all round and a trip
to see the MOT man!)

Here's a quick vid... I got a new camera for xmas.. this was my first attempt
at video editing on the PC.. So what better than a quick tour of my sheds!

I guess I'd better get working on it now....!
Cheers all!

Hmmmm . . . where did that video at the tail end of your post go? Looked interesting.

If just enough is really good, then too much ought to be perfect.

nice install "clock" looks good.
the 3 guages would have fitted in the botum part of your center console.

Where are you going to put the mobo?

I 'could' but it's a bit too low down and out of eyeline for my liking...
(your milage may vary) So I decided to move the one guage I get
the most laughs from...

Still debating a 'control panel' in the lower cubby... (power override switch,
usb connector, kitt voice box)

Will depend on wether I can be fussed with drawing something up and laser
cutting it...

mobo... ah.. I have a laptop that someone sat on and smashed the screen.
So, for now at least, thats going to be living in the boot

Cheers!

maybe the position redgti used, behand the side pannel at the back seats.
I hade mine on the air-intake, but it didn't start up due to the cold. I wil chech this position again, if i can et my hands on some heatregestering stickers. Because its pretty ideal planty of cooling and no noise in the car.
Now its under the front seat, but thats no option for you.

I use the standerd heating switches of the seats for controling the mobo
(4 switches 2 for the seats, and 2 for the mobo)

My heated seats actually work so reassigning those switches isn't an option!

I do have a switch mounted in the spare location to the left of the heated
seat switches that was used as an electic ariel override. I may press that
into service as a pc override now.

I'm hoping to use the velleman i/o board to control the electric ariel from
FreeICE. Firing the relay only when tuned to a radio station. I might not bother
tho.. I already have that ariel override switch after all....

for the laptop....
My current 'plan' is to build a fake floor in the boot. Raising the boot floor by 2 inches.
that will give me space inside the fake floor for the laptop, psu's, 2 channel and 4 channel
amps. Then I'll be building a box for the 8inch sub... and possibly replacing the fabric
boot cover with a wooden one to house a pair of 6x9's...

but that 'end' of the install is just at the imagineering stage right now

I haven't updated this in forever. Time I brought it up to date I suppose...

Rather than waffle on I'll just add in some pictures in some sort of
chronological order to give you an idea whats been going on in the last
twelve months......

False floor being started.

Screen Fitted into dash.

Centre Console Switch Panel

MOT aquired.

Bass Box Built.

False Floor Installed.

Guage Replacements Built.

Shown at Digital Car Show '08.

Switch Panel Upgrades

Random Dash Pic.

Wiring Tidyup.

Door Build.

Everything has been working fine for 12 months.. So it's time to start
adding more toys!

Velleman K8055.

Control App for K8055

Slot loading CDROM.

Power for CDROM

Quality time in the workshop.

That'll do for now. Has brought things pretty much up to date!
