it's an amazing vehicle, if your not looking for a flashy yuppie suv. I've got 140k on it and the only problems i've had is a light bulb went out, and the temp gauge had a loose wire. Other than that these things are built extremely well, and i wouldn't be surprised if i got another 100k on it without problems.

You will probably spend AT LEAST 2x what you initially budget for your CarPC Project!

all i recommend is plan on keeping a headunit if you want fm at all. i tried a radioshark and the quality was horrible so i ended up adding a headunit anyways. it doesn't look that great and i'm trying to figure out what i'm going to cover it with to make it fit in better. oh, and dont waste your time or money with a lilliput. get a xenarc and be done with it.

how much are you planning on spending?

you really don't like the lilliput, have there been alot of people with problems with there stuff, cuz from what i've read they are the number one sold touchscreen.
I don't really have a set price on how much i spend, i'll see as it goes along. I found a guy selling a complete setup, touchscreen(lilliput) intel board,gps,iguidance,m2 PSU, some cables a usb wireless n, 120gb hard drive for 450 so i'm going to jump on that. But realistically i'm trying to spend under six hundred for the complete install. As far as the headunit i got lucky when i bought the vehicle the guy i bought it from just installed a single din dvd headunit there is a tiny screen on the headunit that displays everything, it's actually pretty cool, but that is covered. I thought about just selling it and buying an amp for the speakers, basically because it looks like i'm going to have to do some relocating of things on the lower dash to fit the headunit. I just would rather hack the dash then do a new wiring setup for the amp. basically i'm going to put the headunit where you have the fan controller on yours. I was looking at some of your pics, and i had a suggestion to where you could put the headunit(if you haven't already thought of this) inside the console, i have seen this done before and also with cb radios, that way it's clean and not in the way(depending on how much stuff you store in the console). It's definately not for me cuz i keep way to much crap in there. Anyways that's my plan

the lilliputs from what i have seen have about a 50% failure rate. they are popular because they are cheap; not because they are quality.

Read this thread, and you will get the idea quickly:
    Lilliput Vs Xenarc Count

I was hoping to spend about $400, but I ended up spending over $1,200 and I'm still stuck with a crappy monitor. I just ordered parts to fix my touch screen, though.

Lilliput #1: Worked for a few days, then wouldn't turn on
Lilliput #2(Current): Touch screen died, ordered another touch panel to fix it

Oh, and I did want to put my head unit in the console, but it was going to be a tight fit, so I just made a painted wooden box for it and attatched it to the center console. It's over one cupholder, so that's where the wires go. Check out the last pic in my worklog.

In addition to my head unit, I still have an amp and I even installed new speakers. I use the factory wiring from the dash to the speakers. The amp wires go from under the passenger seat to the dash. It wasn't that big of a deal. I purchased a wiring harness from wal-mart which we spliced into so if I ever wanted to change it, I could.

yeah, but they are not that much cheaper. and a lot of those problems are due to user error these touch screens weren't meant to be taken apart and hacked. i'm going to avoid taking as much of it apart as possible. probably just the bezel is whats coming off then i'm going to epoxy it to the back of the dash piece and fill in the holes and everything with dynatron then sand, sand, sand...and paint it then put it back together. although i'm interested to know whether the epoxy will hold the screen or if i'm going to have to build a base for it to sit on. we'll see, but thanks for the input

my touch screen failed due to the heat. it's a recognized known problem that i haven't seen on xenarcs yet. they especially weren't built for in-car enviornments. for some reason, though, the xenarcs have stood up to a lot more abuse. i have never done more than take the bezel off of my lilliput and have always been very careful with it.. they are very cheaply made monitors. if you would like to buy one, that's fine.. i'm just simply recounting my bad experiences with them to warn you.

the five minute epoxy won't hold worth a crap. we tried that at first and it fell right off. we then tried to epoxy that comes with two tubes in one(you mix them together) and it worked great. just used a lot of that and it holds fine.. doesn't need a base.
