    1998 Ford Explorer Project

This is my project as it is today. Im starting the plans on having a flush 7 inch LCD, HDD Player installed flush in the dash, Pioneer Head Unit in glove box.

I didnt purchase a full CarPC for the simple fact that I love my head unit and the HDD Media Player I have does all the functions I need when im driving. I really didnt want GPS and although it is nice I dont think I need it. But I might add a CarPC later so who knows.

    This is my head unit

I love its clean sound and I can use the AUX output for my HDD Media Player

    HDD Media Player

I have a 120gig Maxtor External Hard Drive for the media player

This is how I had my head unit and 5.6 LCD set up before.

It sticks out like a sore thumb and it does'nt look as good as a flush install so I moved my 5.6 LCD for the back seat passengers

Media player and hardrive in arm rest

Alright so I purchased a 7" LCD off of Ebay. I want to install that here

Also I want to move the HDD Media Player under the LCD

Now the problem would be where to put the pioneer head unit. Im thinking the best place is to mount it in the glove box.

I had a remote for the head unit and I remember that I could stand outside and skip tracks while I sat on my porch so im guessing that the head unit in the glove box it should be alright. I ordered a remote from pioneer as well because I lost the one that came with my head unit.

    Any suggestions??????

    Head Unit Location

After getting some feedback about my head unit in the glove box. I was told that the IR wont read through the glove box. So I ordered a under dash radio kit. Ill install the head unit under the passenger side dash.

I wonder if the area between the dash and the console might be a good location, too.

what does? the OP is still in the planning phase.

I think the screen placed where the radio is now, and the radio placed in the pocket on the bottom of the dash would be what I would do.

You could also move the hvac controls to the pocket, and put the radio where the controls were, but it may be hard to extend everything down there.

Having the radio under the dash on the passenger side seems a little strange, being able to control it without needing to use the remote will make a big difference in everyday use.

    Good luck with your project.

Im really contemplating removing the message center alltogether and put my head unit in its place. All the message center really does is tell me how many miles before empty, engine and oil temp. Im thinking I really dont need it.

This is the message center. Its below the dash and connects to the cupholder. Im thinking I can cut a hole for my LCD here so that way I dont even have to move my deck at all. Also I think sun reflection wont be much of a problem.

Or you could move the message center elsewhere in the dash, or maybe into that under-dash radio case you bought.

I just pulled out the message center bezel. I removed my 5.6 LCD from the back and decided im gonna install that in the front and buy head rest monitors for the back. I saw a set of two at my local flea market for $175. Cha Ching :-)

The 5.6 fits almost perfect. Ill have to cut about two inches to make it fit how I want it. Im buying a dremel today so I can start cutting.

The message center actually is incased in a black box with screw holes. I can easily install it under the dash. I just have to extend the wires to reach. Ill keep the message center buttons where they are. They shouldnt interfere with the LCD. I think I have enough room.
