Congratulations on a great job. Looks factory. If you don't mind I have some quick Q's for you:

    1. How's it holding up to the summertime heat?
    2. Would your aluminum folded "case/mount" work for mounting a DD HU?
    3. Is this the only way to install a double DIN HU into the G3 ('06+) Accent?

Thanks again for the pics and documentary!

    1. Well, the computer itself is holding up well. The bezel, however has had some issues with the ABS cement. However it doesn't seem to be getting any worse so I should be OK to just sand/fill/paint it one more time and it should be good.

    2. As for mounting a double DIN HU, the factory bracket is fine for that, the only issue is that the opening is wider that DIN so you would need a trim kit and no one seems to make a double DIN trim kit for the gen-3 Accents.

    3. See above.

    Pictures coming, I promise...

Great work, again man. I'll give this project a shot. Did you have to relocate any controls?

Also, looks like you grabbed a "spare" bezel from a junkyard Accent? Or did you "risk" your one and only?

    Thanks again!

PS. Can't wait to see the pics!

Nice project, I really like it. I have an 08 accent hatch as well, so I am goign to keep an eye on this on ;-).

One question. How did you manage to get the bezel/frame off? I tried to do it on mine, and was unable to get it back on. The bottom portion kept coming out. Luckily I was able to get it replaced under warenty, but still. i would liek to know how you managed to do it.

I got the bezel off with a screwdriver wrapped in tape wedged into the upper right corner (yes, this caused some slight damage to the dash). Check hmaservice.com for the "correct" way to do it with the official tool.

As for getting it back on, you have to understand the clips. They consist of a tab on the back of the bezel and a removable plastic spring clip that slides over it that both locks onto the tab and into the hole. Sometimes when you take the bezel off the clip part stays in the hole and when you try to get the bezel back on, you can push the clip back into the dash whereupon it usually falls on the floor but could get stuck on a ledge or crevice inside. I've found this is only a problem with the bottom row of clips; the top row are metal and I haven't seen any come off the tabs yet. So, make sure you have all your clips before reinstalling.

Well, here's a quick snap of the bezel installed in the dash. You can see where the ABS cement has bubbled up under the paint on the bottom and subsided, leaving a slight depression, on the sides. Also visible is the scratch on the top right from first removing the bezel from the dash (click image for a larger view). I'm going to leave it for another week or so to stabilize and then I'll do a quick touch-up.

I'll be getting some new cables for the internals soon (shorter USB cables, a better USB hub, better patch cord for the radio, etc., so I'll get some internal pics then.

On another note, I've found that the stock antenna is indeed powered, so I'll have to wire a relay or something to get that taken care of.

That's where it's been the past while. I've been meaning to block out some time to do the final touch-up on the bezel; maybe this weekend...

I finally got over the problems I had with the GPS serial port but I'm still having intermittent issues with the GPS itself. Sometimes when I turn on the car it just refuses to get a lock. If I power cycle the GPS receiver it comes back. It's a combo Bluetooth/USB unit so it has an on/off setting and does not power on/off with the USB connection and has to be left "on".

I replaced the cheapo patch cables from the sound card to the amp and from the HD radio to the line-in with some nice ones from Monoprice.

Also replaced the cheap 4-port USB hub with a nice 7-port one, also from Monoprice. It's also a Multi-TT hub so the slower devices don't slow down the fast ones or each other (unlike the cheap one).

Because of the layout, it was extremely hard to plug in the serial port for the HD radio and impossible to screw it down so I got a USB-serial adaptor to hook it to as it was threatening to fall off. Also, the tabs holding the fuse holder together on the 12v line to the HD-radio broke off leaving me with some mysterious radio shutoffs and ominous chattering of the relay inside the HD-radio so I just snipped it out and spliced the line together.

As for the near future, I have some Bosch-type relays en-route to add some niceties. One is to control power for the antenna; it works but reception is poor in a couple of areas on my daily commute. Another will be used to control the aux line into the power supply so I can turn on the computer while the car is off.
