night!!
Well basically I have wanted a pc in my car ever since I was able to drive... and finally it is almost a reality. I have had the pc temporarily in my car for about 2 months now. The main thing that I have been waiting on to proceed was time and money. Fortunately FedEx has graciously funded the entirety of my setup. That is, I work there. The main thing that has been keeping me from starting a work log/finishing is time. Between College and FedEx there is not much time for the poor little Aveo.
I am running a full sized computer simply because I already had it.
Specs are as follows:
Windows XP Media Center Edition
AMD Athlon 3500+ 2.19 GHz
1.5 Gigabytes of RAM
200 Gigabyte Sata HDD
M4-ATX
8" Shark LCD
Kenwood Excelon Head Unit
Volfenhag 1000 watt sub amp
Kenwood 10" sub
Having a full sized computer and a sub compact car finding a home for it was kind of hard. Eventually I settled on this design (3/4" MDF):
And here is what it looks like built:
The hard drive will be remotely mounted to avoid vibrations from the sub.
The PC is not directly connected to the box, it is held in place with the remnants of a ratchet strap.
I purchased a 4 ch rca cable from ebay for $10. I use 2 ch for the sub and the other 2 ch for the audio from the pc to the head unit. The 4 ch cable will plug into the plate on the rear of the box where the pc connections are. This keeps things neat and easy to disconnect if I ever need to remove the box from my trunk for maintenance.
The rca cables going from the amp to the rca bracket on the rear are custom made from 14 gauge speaker wire and gold plated connectors. The wires are tightly twisted to eliminate interference.
Both the power and the ground wire connect directly to the box (again for easy removal).
Eventually the pc and amp will be covered with an expanded metal grate. with the second fan mounted to it.
Pictures of it in the car to come soon. Goodnight.
