2007 Jeep Wrangler CarPC

.:Update 1JUNE10:.

-- I have had problems with the touch head unit

1. The fans in the head unit are extremely loud.
2. The unit changed modes sometimes after hitting a bump.
3. Sometimes the unit will not turn off. Even after shutting the car off needing a swift beating into submission to let it know who's boss.
4. Sound transfers to different speakers making it louder for different sides and spontaneous times. NOTE: This could be due to the fact that Best Buy is a terrible company and gave me a bad harness but thats another story.

UPDATE 1JUNE10: Removed *****y touch screen head unit re-installed factory unit. Ordered EBY701 and replacement top dash from 4WD.com part #DAYKJ71020 pictured below

Also ordered a mount from Ram Mounts to mount monitor on replacement top dash.

1. Get rid of crappy Chinese head unit. [COMPLETE]
2. Install single din head unit made of good quality. [CANCELED]
3. Install VMI70 (http://www.short-circuit.com/product/VMI70.html)[CANCELED]

This is a pic of the current stock head unit. Right now I am deciding on if I should put a touch screen there, or mount one somewhere in the vehicle leaving the stock head in, and making things more simple. (Im leaning towards more simle :) )

The PC placement is fine. Also I would stick a Lilliput EBY701 screen in there. It will look more OEM. The Lilliput EBY701 looks like something that Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep would put in its cars.

I had to have some one (Nexson) really mod my bezel to get the screen in ( I drive a 03 Durango which has that dumb 1 1/2 size DIN). Thankfully all of their radios now are double DIN, so the mods will be very light.

I'm just getting started this week on building a car-puter for my 2001 jeep wrangler. I like where your putting the computer. I plan on putting mine were the passenger airbag used to go 'I hope if there's enough room'.
As for the monitor. Iv only got 1 din bay in dash, but you've got the option for a 2 din monitor. that's both good and bad. Good; nice big screen, lots of room for all the goodies that come with a 2 din systems. Bad: Big sign that says "steal me" 'not that whats in there now isn't saying that, but if you put something shiner then stock it might be just enough incentive to open up your jeep to get at it'. plus if you go off roading like I do with the 2 din bay you have more surface area for dust and moisture to get in it.
I'm going to have to seal off my in dash touch screen when i get it in my jeep. still thinking of ways to do that. Is Going to be really busy re-designing, manipulating, and casting a new center console to seal and theft resist my display. I might suggest using a external screen for ease of removal. or concealment. As you know jeeps are one of the funnest vehicles to secure. And with this build you may have to sacrifice function for security. I hope to hear how your project going. Ill try to start posting my build as soon as I start receiving parts for it, that and my tax return, got a nice 2.5 inch lift and a Xenarc MDT-X7000 display waiting to be bought with that.

Okay, I know its been forever, but Im finally getting back to trying to do my CarPC. Im concerned about how to do the audio. My jeep is a Sahara model so it has the premium sound package. Would I have to buy an amp to use my sound system with a good sound card. Could someone point me in the direction of how to set that up? I have no clue when it comes to car stereos.

Yours has the subwoofer in the center console right?
Mine had the sub in the center. I was not pleased with it.

The easiest route is to replace the whole factory unit. Just about any aftermarket system will sound better. I did that to my jeep and used a wire harnes to hook up my speakers stock speakers . Immediately sound was better. But i had to replace the rear speakers as the new head unit was too powerful for them causing them to pop/distort.

OR....
you could go headless. If i knew a lot more about car audio and amps better than the basics i do, i would definitely go with no head unit at all and run all sound off the computer into two amps: (one 4 channel and one for subs)

If you have a major sporting outlet you can find much better cases. That was a REALLY tight and close fit... Lots of cutting. IDE use in that kind of case is out of the question unless you get a board with ide as top feed rather than side feed. But who uses IDE anymore?
