Project WRX: 2006 Subaru WRX TR

Here lies the worklog of my carputer. I've got a lot of ideas and a ton of research, but at least I can start putting some of it down and making a real live plan. These are mostly just my thoughts and ideas for my own reference, but I'm open to comments/suggestions/hatemail.

    Features:
    • MP3s, with the ability to easily transfer from the home to carpc - maybe an SSD for OS and supporting software and a easily removable external HD?
    • Slot loading CD drive accessable from the front seat - attached under the dash? attached in the glove box?
    • Bluetooth for any wireless devices
    • Nav because I can get lost in my own driveway!
    • Accessable USB ports for other devices like USB sticks, ipods, temporary devices - maybe in the current clock pod?
    • Internet or satellite radio, far down the road
    • Other control devices - or is the touchscreen enough for everyday use?

    Carputer:
Haven't nailed down anything really. Pretty sure I want something 1.5ghz or more, 1gig of ram. Is there room under the clock pod? Would it be better behind the monitor with fans in the dash for airflow? Would it be easier just under one of the front seats, but have more cables to run?

Saving this space for more details/thoughts.

    Monitor:
Most likely will end up like everyone else with a Lilliput 7" molded in the current double din opening.

Saving this space for further details/thoughts.

Subaru wants $86 for a replacement dash facia, which has led me to order an 8" touchscreen.

I found it extremely easy to run wires under a seat or to the back from the front of the car.

Core 2 duo is so cheap and power efficient, I don't understand why anyone messes with the really tiny stuff. Check my WIP for details on my computer.

The glove box can be easily removed, exposing a lot of room. Don't know about space under the clock pod, I'm about to open that up this weekend.

Highly recommend Garmin GPS for PC, antenna found my loc in 5 seconds and works indoors!! (what does that tell you about my roof?)

Are you saying you purchased a second one and are molding the 8" in?

Yea, I've put in some green LEDs under the dash and routed the wires easily, as well as put my current sound system in, so I'm not overly concerned with that. Your next point pertains to this though...

I think a lot of people like to get creative with where to put the system. I'd prefer to build something that fits under a seat or in other unused space - the trunk is already used. I was also trying to keep the initial system cost around $300. Ha!

I wasn't really thinking "removed", though taking it out completely and building the whole system there would be sweet. Then we're just talking $$$ to get it all fabbed. I can build and route, but a fabber I am not. Would be nice to find a partner in crime that fabs - I build our systems and he fabs it all in.

Crazy! I'll definately look at that when I edit my project post next.

My biggest problem with the build is swallowing the average of $500 to get a monitor, mount, and bezel. If anyone can steer me in a direction I've just completely missed, please do!

As a side note, I think I like the new verb I made up "to fab" and noun "fabber".

Haven't given up yet, just been trying to find a cheaper option around the only snag - the indash monitor.

I got an email today from Bybyte about a new 08 Impreza kit for just under $300 for the monitor and mounting bracket - need to find out if it fits the 06. They have another kit on there that looks strangely similar to the whole middle dash portion, but it says it's for a Legacy/Outback.

newbie here with a STi. looking to build a carputer using my brother's old dell laptop (p4 centrino). i'll be following your project and trying to work out the details of my own. might be a dumb question, but why can't we use the bybyte double din panels that they sell for 30 bucks? that plus a new lilliput would be like 200 bucks, which is all i was looking to spend

bybyte double din frame on ebay

If you're looking for an OEM fab job for the screen, I think something like the below is what you want.

Other cheaper route would be to use the Subaru bolt in kit. The bybyte kit will not fit in the double din opening since the screen is bigger then the opening. What you have to do to make it work is basically glue it behind the oem plastic bezel.

    1) That image you linked has a different AC system than mine, though it could work for others.

    2) Going with a custom fab job is fine, but it ends up being the same amount as the Mechatronics kit.

    3) I want a totally removable solution that looks stock. Maybe it's just that you can have two of the following: removable, stock looking, or cheap - not all three.

I believe your TR has the manual AC knobs still. I would think the same can be done, but it's not cheap for sure.

If you want to go on the cheap, get the bybyte kit, and just glue it behind the bezel. I have spoken with him and that's the way he got it to work.

i find it strange that any aftermarket double din headunit fits perfectly in our center bezel and yet no aftermarket touch screen will fit in this slot without modification. why doesnt someone come out with a double din bolt in touch screen? seems like there would be a market for it!

anyways, back to the bybyte. if i were to go this route and glue the screen behind the bezel, would that cut off any part of the screen? has anyone tried trimming the bezel in order to make the screen fit?

interested to see which direction you go in for your project. i am hoping to buy a lcd within the next few weeks in order to begin mine
