I have found a touch screen that seems perfect, I think it might be too good to be true, it just seems too cheap. But its from jaycar and I think its a fairly reputable store. AUD$200 aka USD$130 Here

Ok time to total everything up:

    7" Touchscreen $200
    Motherboard and processor $150
    Hard drive $60
    M2-ATX $100
    DVD Drive $ 80
    2GB RAM $ 45
    GPS BU-353 $75
    Total $710 or USD$460

Wow I must be on of the few people where is turns out to cost less than you thought it would. I will most likely buy more parts in the future like OBD-II and I'll probably need to buy wires and stuff to mount in it etc....

Be cautious here -- it's a repaired item with a 90-day warranty that cannot be returned, only repaired. I see no brand information. And I see no information about resolution; it appears to be VGA -- 640 x 480 -- rather than 800 x 600. Lilliputs, Xenarcs and Sharks are 800 x 600 native resolution, capable of 1024 x 768 if you can stand a bit of softness in the image.

To see the difference resolution makes, get the smallest CRT monitor you can find that's capable of 1024 x 768. Run whatever front end you plan to use at 1024 x 768, 800 x 600, and 640 x 480. It's surprising how much difference it makes.

Another factor is brightness. Some monitors are just plain dim.

If you can get to a Jaycar store, see if you can look at one of these before you buy it, or at least ask what brand they are and then look for comments.

Maybe that monitor is good. But you might also take a look at this Shark sold by Goodeals18 for USD$168. I know that's more money, and I'm not saying I outright recommend it, simply because I haven't done any feedback research. But it's new, max resolution of 1024 x 768 (native -- crispest -- resolution is probably 800 x 600), and some MP3Car members have bought them. You could MP3Car for feedback on Shark and Gooddeals18 (you can also find Gooddeals18 on eBay, but the prices seem a little higher, probably to account for the eBay fees).

The company is in the USA, and I haven't checked on shipping cost to Oz. If your research shows Shark to be okay, maybe you can find Shark monitors there.

If just enough is really good, then too much ought to be perfect.

Thanks for that, maybe it would have been a good idea for me to read the bold read text... Experience has taught me that situations like that don't often work out. Well looks like its back to the drawing board. I'll just keep searching, something will pop up eventually.

Hey Nosajs, I'm in Australia as well. I'd second rdholtz's motion: if you want to be sure, go to Jaycar and check out the unit. Not only is it a repaired item, it also has a CCFL backlight, which means it won't be very readable in sunlight (I inquired about this a few weeks ago at my local Jaycar, and subsequently ordered a Lilliput 629 GL from eBay). The good thing is your radio isn't very high up on the dash (unlike my 07 Camry), so sunlight probably won't affect it as much. Just something to consider though.

The Lilliput 629 with LED backlight seems to be a good option for those on a budget wanting a sunlight-readable LCD. I'll let you know how mine is when it arrives ... one of these days now ...

Sorry to hear about the floods ... it's been on the news. Hopefully it'll subside ASAP

Thanks MeeM, Ive decided against that screen though I knew it was too good to be true. I had a look on ebay for a 629 and I could only find one. Its $776 or $1009 buy it now, thats well out of my price range lol, or did you manage to find a cheaper one?

I have found two more that might be good: 1 and 2
1 is bigger and cheaper (when including postage) but has no brand name. 2 is a lilliput and I won't have to modify my dash as much to get it in.

Ok, I've pm'd you with the details of the ebay seller from whom I bought my stuff. And btw, it arrived today! w00t! *bounces off walls*

If you were choosing between 1 and 2, I'd suggest 2 because it's a known brand and it's something you can find help with here on the forums due to many other members having the same LCD.

    Sub and Amp

Its started raining again and it seems like we could get a second flood lol so I haven't ordered any parts yet but I will when the mail starts again.

So to keep me busy I decided to install my amp and sub.
    Sub - 150w RMS Kicker 12"
    Amp - 300w RMS Boss 4 channel

Atm I have the sub bridged across channel 3 and 4 of the amp and channel 1 and 2 aren't connected to anything. 1 and 2 will be connected to the two front door speakers when I get around to it. Currently my ipod is connected to the amp.

Here's a pic to show how my setup looks atm.

When the carputer is in the 3.5mm jack will be plugged into it instead of the ipod.

Rain rain go away so I can get a carputer
