The next version of xGPS will have some of the bugs fixed. The main on for me is not being able to use your current location as a start point for directions. According to the bug list, this has already been fixed and is awaiting release.
Sweettooth is also actively working on a Bluetooth solution for the iPhone. This could make things very interesting for a car based iPhone install.
I'm doing the same thing Bugbyte. I've got a 7" LCD to install and will output the iPhone straight to the LCD and amps.
I use Pandora for audio and don't think I'll ever turn my radio on again.

In his MP3Car video, Robert Wray recommends Earthscape for navigation; it's available at the Apple store. I don't have an iPhone (yet -- but I'm getting closer), so I can't check it out.
I have a touch pro and it has a optional cable that allows you to connect it to a A/V port with stereo sound. Only draw back is that you have to use the phones touch screen to navigate, but I am sure that you can use BT control devices also. If I wasnt such a multimedia whore, I would have went with a pocket PC install. Do research, maybe they have the same type of cable for the iphone.
PS: Nevermind, lol, i read through the whole thread, I see they do have one.
Long live pandora!!!!! When does the next xgps update come out? Can earthscape do hybrid maps? I'd say anyone of those is better than pioneers navi. Also rumor has it that tom tom is on the process of making one for the app store.
I watched the blog video and I wasnt really impressed. There is lag on the second screen. I have to image movies will look like cr@p on this. Now for your basic needs, this is great, but for other things, I really dont think this is the death of the carpc. All it is is a simple alternative to it, but alot of people will be turned on by power. I notice alot of people are playing 3D games in the car, multitasking and tons other stuff. Lets see a PPC/iPhone do that.
Got the video cable today. It plugs into the bottom of the iPod and has 1 composite out, 2 RCA audio and 1 USB plug, nice bonus which means it can be powered by the car while being plugged in.

I tried it out on my 24" widescreen monitor with composite input. Looked great and played well, no problem. Also, the headphone jack worked while playing. I haven't checked to see if both the headphone and RCA play simultaneously.
So, that's step one. Pretty straightforward. Here's the issue with the display, though. It only plays VIDEO out. It does not mirror the screen. That will require me to jailbreak the phone and use an app to mirror the display at all times. That's step two, to jailbreak the iPod touch and be able to add non-standard apps to the iPod.
Is your iBug tracker correct? If so your not 10 miles from me today... cool.
I just got in a Jensen UV8020 to be my LCD screen for the iPhone. I'm hoping to eventually be able to tap into it's touch screen and completely control the iPhone from the head unit.
I'd love to hear your results from ScreenSpliter and TVOut. I've had trouble getting either one to be reliable. ScreenSpliter is 90% there, but the lag in the springboard drives me nuts.
