I think what we really need to focus on is simply replacing the stock Iphone screen with an aftermarket 10 inch touchscreen. I REALLY wish apple themselves would come out with a 10 inch touch screen tablet device running the Iphone OS! This is being heavily rumored.

At the end of the day, most people who are following this thread are diehard lovers of the clean, consistent UI of the iphone OS, and its awesome touch capabilities. We just want the display to be much bigger size so we can see it while driving. This simple gesture based UI is perfect for driving (if the screen is enlarged), and has no competition.

Hey I just thought of something. If for now, since we're only able to mirror the iphones display on an external screen while having to navigate from the actual iphone, wouldn't it be great if there was some kind of cursor arrow on the iphone's interface. That way, you could simply use the iphone like a trackpad, while looking at your vga screen or whathave you. When researching this, I found Icursor. It's mearly a javascript that you put in your bookmarks in safari. It enables you to have an arrow cursor however, it is only usable within safari. I'm going to keep looking to see if there is a cursor app or something. Just my 2Cents

edit: or perhaps even an interactive background/wallpaper with a ripple effect when touched. that way you see where your touching

HMMM, or maybe a system setup to mimic the iphone? Notice how incredibly slow it is?

A quick update on where I am with this project. With the arrival of the Sheeva plug computer, I've been getting a crash course on Linux over in the Linux forum. I've done the following on the plug:

    1. Set up a web server
    2. Set up a php server
    3. Set up a mySQL database installation
    4. Managed to access the Sheeva from the terminal window and that Safari web browser on my iPhone.

I am currently learning how to make the Sheeva interact with external hardware. I think I may take a shot at getting kev000's Fusion Brain daemon to run on the Sheeva. That will require me to learn how to compile it for the Sheeva and install it. Then, I'll have to figure out how to access it to see if it works.

Finally, I'll need to figure out how to write an interface (likely in perl) that will allow me to send commands from a web page that will be served up by the Sheeva to the iPhone. I'll want to click a button on the web page that will send a command to my perl interface and trigger something on the Fusion Brain.

I may decide to use chunkyks' OBDII interface rather than the Fusion Brain one. Either way, I'll have to figure out the same types of things.

So, there is progress being made, it's just moving on the Linux front right now.

The iPhone build may get competition soon. FLUX is releasing a version of its Front End for Windows CE 4.2 and up. Its based on CF3 and will supposedly be able to make plugins for it quite easily. I am thinking installing a PPC style system for my parents car. That way if they dont like it, they can use the HU. Cool thing is that Newer PPCs have the ability to use a cable to connect to RCA video. So many people have made their own cables so the cost is low. Also I know they make touch screen drivers, so maybe a plugin can be made to allow the phone to control a full touchscreen.

that's interesting! If the Ipod 3.0 update has something that helps user interface control, this may be all water under the bridge. The biggest thing is that external control. Being able to connect and throw in the glove box and use a main screen would be wonderful. Even better would be an Apple multitouch display for car use (we could hope), in different sizes.

I personally just like the iphones simplicity and integration with Itunes and Audible, that's why I'd stick with it. Not because its the BEST, but becaues it lets me have more time to actually listen to music, find the info I want, and use it! The touch is pretty top notch and just overall a great UI.

That said, I'd never by an Apple computer, but the iphones price is fair to me for what you get (wheras apple pc's, well can anyway so Rolls Royce on a Mazda budget)
