    SO... Cnet quotes:
11:10 a.m.: Accessory developers can now build companion software applications. The app can talk to the hardware over the dock connector, or wirelessly over Bluetooth.
So will this solve the issue. A bluetooth portable keyboard and controller to allow screen manipulation? I'm REALLY hoping that this thread keeps progressing as my whole goal of a car pc is based on the iphone as i plan on changing cars in 2 years and want the minimal components installed to accomplish my task!

    Keep me posted, i'm subscribed!

I'm really excited about Voice Control

    info/demo here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3...e-control.html

Yet it seems pegged to the new 3g S iPhone and not to 3.0 software. Why? I wonder if this is just an app Apple made or if it depends any on hardware? I.e.; the faster processor to pull it off, etc. For if not, I imagine the hacker community will find a way to get this on the older phones.

(still holding out big hopes for the upcoming "Tablet")

any updates since the release happened yesterday on comments on external screen control?

I'm going to have to get a head unit soon for ipod hookup and to control the stereo upgrade... so i'm interested in if this external screen control is a viable option yet.

PaulF noted in his worklog that he hacked the Sheeva plug to run on car power. His webpage on how it was done is here.

Well, I have the 3GS. Very very nice. Voice Control is awesome and can also be controlled from the earphone controls/mic. I keep looking at it wondering how that earphone gadget (which now does volume in addition to voice control), can somehow be tweeked to mount to the steering wheel, etc. Only problem is it doesn't do "play song ###". Just play Album, which gets you there then hit the center button on the cord to forward, etc.

Just a matter of time till Apple or someone comes out with a way to launch apps with it.

Haven't upgraded yet. Waiting for the dev team to post the jailbreak before I do it.

On the Sheeva front, though, I've gotten several people who actually know something about Linux interested enough to buy a Sheeva plug. Meanwhile, I've been both playing around with it and learning Linux from some books I bought. I think I've got sort of a handle on how it works -at least at the beginner level.

I've installed gpsd, which talks to your GPS unit and chunkyks' obdgpslogger on the Sheeva. The idea is to get apps that I can test here in the house so I can access them on the iPhone. To do that, I need to install FTDI drivers to let serial devices like GPS and OBD ELM cable to talk to the Sheeva.

PaulF has apparently gotten it to work, but he's way more Linux savvy than I am. I've found some posts on how to go about it and I'll get it figured out eventually.

I'm also tackling php and mySQL so I can script web pages that the Sheeva will serve up to the iPhone with the OBDII and GPS data. Later, I'll work on getting Fusion Brain control as well.

I think once the Sheevas arrive on the Linux side, we'll get some traction. They're talking about putting together a distribution for the Sheeva that is pre-compiled and will have all of the bits and pieces you need to use it in the car. Until then, this is a good learning experience for me.

Oh yeah, almost forgot - they're also working on a web-based front end. That would allow you to access the gui from a remote location like a browser. Don't know precisely how it will work, but all good things!

Bug - meaning you are going to upgrade to the 3GS and sell your 3G? Or upgrade to 3.0 on your 3G? Cuz there's a jailbreak for 3G 3.0.

Upgrade to 3.0. I hadn't checked for the jailbreak this weekend. They said they would post it pretty soon. I'll look for it.

Yes, it's out. Working pretty good. Cydia was slow but I've not checked it in over a day.
The UNLOCK is not out for 3G 3.0. Nor is anything yet available for 3G S.

http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ I didn't use RedSn0w (apparently akin to QuickPwn). I used the new Pwnage (expert mode) for Mac in the 2nd blog page. Copied all my themes out first via ssh to dump back in to save time.
