Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, as I have never owned a touchscreen made for a carputer before, but I think I see a problem. In order to implement your solution, you would need to have two video inputs displaying at the same time: VGA for the computer and composite for the iPhone. Theoretically, you don't really *need* the VGA from the computer, so you can just eliminate that. But will the USB connection for the touchscreen and the composite input be able to work at the same time? I thought most, if not all, screens of this type shut off the USB touchscreen connection when VGA is not selected as the input. Now that I think about it though... if it were possible to convert the composite signal to VGA... all your problems might be solved... unless the delay is more than just getting information on the display (as in, the delay is in actually executing a given command). Sorry for my thinking out loud

My proposal is to only input video from the Iphone and just have the computer video going to nothing. This setup may need a RGB to VGA cable to work properly but without having any of the needed equipment or money (finishing my last days as a student) I can't test to be sure.

A cable like this may or may not work. It depends on the resolution the Iphone is sending out. Do you think that software can be written for the Iphone to change the output resolution? If so this looks like it would work.

Now if someone has a 8-9" touch screen they would like to send me or sell me super cheap I could try this out.

Hmmm...I don't understand the proposal. Are you saying to use VNC to connect and control the iPhone? If so, how does this work any better then using screensplitr and controlling it via the browser method?

In that instance, you connect to the iPhone via bonjour and it appears in the browser window. I guess your method is a bit better because the video response is improved, but the quality of the picture from the VGA output of the computer is much, much better then the video out of the iPhone.

BTW - upgrading to 3.0 broke the video output cable. It no longer will output composite video! I'm not paying Apple another $50 for a stinking 3.0 cable, either.

No, haven't tried that. But I shouldn't need to. This is the 'official' Apple cable. It's got the chip in it and everything.

I better recheck the video on/off settings before trying to patch it to make it work with an OFFICIAL cable. It's got to be something stupid like that.

You have the right idea that I was trying to get at. It seems like in your video that they problem is that the video response is way to slow to be useful. My design idea fixes that problem.

About the video quality issue, did you try the RGB connections from the iphone yet? If not that may be the way to go. If you are able to do some programming you may be able to write some code that modifies the iphone's video output so that it outputs to the screens native resolution.

If you have not tried using the RGB or a RGB to vga connector to connect to your screen it's kinda hard to judge how good the output quality of the iphone really is.

Haven't tried RGB to VGA yet. That costs $$$ and although I can get an iPhone to RGB cable, again, it costs $$$.

Recently, I've just been muddling through using the iPhone screen, which is okay, but it is better on the car screen.

I'm still concentrating on the Sheeva helper for now. Chunkyks got his Sheeva and we're collaborating on using it.

well there are DIY plans for RGB to VGA cables if you were interested. If anyone has a Iphone to RGB cable and was willing to try it that would be awesome.

I've seen them, but my understanding is that the new version of the iPhone requires the chip in it to work reliably. Although, of course, mine does NOT work reliably -it doesn't work at all!
