yeah I saw that you said the update broke it, that sucks. I am sure that this will be addressed at some point. The cable I am thinking of would connect to the ends of the apple cable and then terminate in a VGA connector. Once your cable works again do you think you might try it?

I am also very curious to see how your shivaplug computer turns out. I bet with a little work you could make a whole car pc setup with one as long as you didn't expect playback of high quality video.

I'm working to get FTDI running on it right now. If I can do that, then OBD and GPS will be accessible. It's possible, just haven't got it to work yet.

If I had a VGA car screen i'd try it but I don't. Cause the cable is like 5$ shipped on eBay. And the apple cable could be purchased at bestbuy and taken back if "it's not something u needed". They have a 30 day return policy.

So...it has a scan converter built into the cable for $5? 'Cause that's what you need to transform analog NTSC into VGA.

@bug-i know what you mean about gps apps that pull their map data from "cloud". i took a road trip from chicago to la and purchased the at&t navigator app for a month. while i never lost gps signal, in the areas where i didn't get a cell signal, i only saw a blue dot on my iphone's screen. as soon as i got back into a coverage area, the map tiles reappeared on the screen.

if i were to use my iphone as full time gps, i would want all that map data locally installed.

Yep, I've tried the navigator app as well and while it works okay, it would be nice if it would download the map tiles you need for the trip you programmed. I don't care if it destroys them when you program another trip. Just so it downloads the tiles when you have a signal!

If you turn off or get too far off track, I'm okay with having to download new tiles.

Frankly, I think these apps could be a lot smarter. If your route is a long one planned mostly down highways, why doesn't it load the tiles for, say, the next 100 miles along with tiles around all of the exits?

If your route is shorter and mostly on local roads, download all the tiles for the trip -or if you're AT&T, you must have an idea of how good your coverage is in the areas you are planning to drive in. Can't you just download the tiles for the areas with weak or congested coverage *before* you drive into them?

This is the power of the cloud! All this processing can take place on servers where it is cheap and easy to make these types of decisions.

I'm just dieing to see some video of these iPhone installs and how they're working. It's near impossible for me to use my imagination with this.

I think this is going to be the way to go. I've known this for a year now. I just hope it'll do everything that needs to be done. While it would be nice to mount it in the dash, I'm fine with some type of external mount but up to the existing stereo - just plug it in to the aux and USB if so equipped.

I pray it's not subsidized in anyway or we are allowed to buy it with no 3g for surely we'll be able to tether it to the iPhone to get 3g on it. I think no one can doubt the existance of Apple's 'tablet' anymore. It's a done deal for me and a game-changer.
