Well, that would be great but it's still a rumor until they come out with it. I'm not sure how well a giant iPod will sell if it costs the same as an iBook, but we'll see.

Until then, I've been working with the Unix guys to ask them to help me put together a distribution that will run on the Sheeva plug. If I can get that together and flash the ROM, I'll be able to start controlling stuff from the iPod/iPhone.

The new Tom-Tom app has been released for iPhone. Read about it here.

I've been using the AT&T nav app and it is not particularly good. I'll post a review of it soon. $100 is a bit steep for the Tomtom app, but it is a lot less than buying a GPS device and you only pay it once, so that's not too bad. Plus, I've used both the Garmin Nuvi and own a standalone TomTom and they are both quite good from an interface standpoint.

Downside is the screen size, but if you can put it on your car screen, that would be great. Runs in both portrait and landscape mode, which is nice.

I've bee able to determine that the new 3.0 software *does* work with the RCA input of my car screen, but ONLY for video playback. The ScreenSplitr and TVOut apps are broken for it.

Bug - It's my understanding Ver. 1.1.0-16 of Screensplittr works for 3.0+
???? I really thought it was working now or they had another release?

Today I was going to see if there's any throw-down reviews of all the GPS apps. Including that $39ish one. Going to head over to youtube to see if any TomTom vids are up. I'm still trying to understand the TomTom Car kit gadgetry but am going to be patient.

I'm still holding out hope for the 'tablet' as being the cure-all, end-all so I'm waiting for that to be released before making a move with my decisions. I just hate the idea of a non-built-in device though, but I don't really need anything for short jaunts to the store, etc. either. IDK.

In my fantasy world, I'd love to have a backup cam view on the iPhone or whatever screen. I really want/NEED a backup camera and can't sort out in my head how it could be done.

You wouldn't need that on the iPhone screen, you'd need that on the auxiliary touch screen, which of course is easy to implement.

Hutacars - would you be so kind as to throw me a bone on that? Maybe a general direction in which I can search/learn? I'm totally ignorant of the concept. Thx. I'd hate to buy a little 4 inch screen or so to clutter up everything but I can't grasp how else I can do it unless I buy a rearview mirror version.

Many of the screens available here on mp3car.com come with a feature that automatically switches to the composite input when a signal is detected. If you wire the power of the camera to the reverse lights, when you go into reverse, the camera receives power, it will come on, and the input will switch on the screen. When you come out of reverse, the camera will lose power, and the input will switch back to the computer input. There are several threads on here about this concept.

Thanks. I just never could reconcile in my head how to get a screen in the dash without hurting my current audio system or make anything work with the head unit's external amp Unless I had the screen externally. I've read & read & read and still don't get it which is why I'm watching this thread closely.

As a best buy employee. I just caught wind that dei the makers of viper car security and remote starts, has made an app for the iPhone. start ur car from anywhere in the world. It is called smartstart. U have to have a viper 5xxx series remote start and the smartstart module which will run ya 300 bones. First year is free. 30$ a year after that. This is awesome news. This could be used in this project. Imagine controlling components from your iPhone. Search YouTube for viper iPhone smartstart.
