    Reboot!

I feel like it's been ages since i worked on my project. Well...I got married so the project was on chill mode until that was done. Now it's time to start things up again.

I decided to "Reboot" my CarPC project. I plan on using a tablet PC as my CarPC. I have found that thoughout the past few months my main concern in the car is music, some "human" communication and I have a interest in exploring ways to communicate with my car over OBDII. There are tons of OBDII solutions available now for Android.

I have not used my car stereo for anything other than connecting my Android to it to scrobble my music as I jam down the road. With that said I am going to experiment with an Android Tablet PC. Nothing crazy like that Samsung (although sweet hardware) because I think its crazy to have to pay that much for a mobile device when I can have the same functions at a lower cost or even free. If a unit has wifi capabilities...why would I pay extra for an additional data plan if I already have a device that is a wifi hotspot or has tether capabilities?? Don't get me wrong..I'm not looking into those Android 1.6 tablets with VIA processor, 128 or 256 ram that you see all the time on eBay. My tablet must be minimum Android 2.2 with 1GHz. It must have bluetooth, wifi, multi-touch, HDMI-out is a plus but not necessary, and expandable memory card slot.

I plan on modifying a double din dash kit and integrate it with a tablet car mount. I found a Bluetooth device that will enable me to stream sound/music to my car speakers using a bluetooth receiver that can connect with jack to RCA Y cable. I am going to play around with this a bit. I am replacing my radio headunit with a small amp that has a remote and basically will perform the functions that I was using my headunit for only it will be mounted on the floor. I will have to create a visio of the design.

I have the miccus BluBridge mini-jack bluetooth receiver coming in the mail hopefully next week. I will test that functionality then will test the amp....we shall see how it goes.

How did you find the quality of the LCD rear view mirror? Did it actually function well as a rear view mirror?

Here are my thoughts..the mirror actually is fine. It's the camera that needs to be updated. The mirror could be improved if it were LED backlit. Other than that it has worked great for me..especially since I have double limo tint all around.

In my CarPC "reboot" I plan on getting a monitor that has 4 way split capability so eventually the rearview monitor will be replaced or be a backup monitor.

I am also going to get a CCD camera which will replace the CMOS camera that I have currently and I will probably see about mounting it higher.

    Bluetooth OBDII

I ordered the PLX Kiwi Bluetooth OBDII unit for my car which is also compatible with my Android. I can't wait to test it out when I get it.

I like how this project is coming along and you've been quite detailed with everything.

Thanks. I'm in the middle of moving so my project progress is slow right now but my design idea keeps evolving.

Windows 7 PC Tablet in Dash

I have yet to find a Windows 7 tablet that covers the features of the Archos 9. I have read reviews complaining about some performance but my main use with be for music and web surfing. So I think this should be sufficient. In any case here is a photoshop'd look of the Archos 9 in my dash. I will be running Centrafuse frontend.

I plan on modifying a double din dash kit with an Archos 9 car mount. There are a few out there I saw that I could modify.

I plan on using an additional Tablet PC but it will be an Android and used for OBDII stats that will always be visible.

    Project Closed...or is it?

Sooo.. my 2005 Altima was totalled by a red light runner. I'm feeling better now but long story short my Altima is no more. The good news is that I now have a 2009 Altima which I will build my new and improved mobile computing solution. Visit my new project thread to see how I plan to mount an android tablet PC in my 2009 Altima dash.

The ins comp wanted to total loss the car but I fought them. The car went into the shop January and its still there. They have to do so much to the front.
