Just thought I'd start a thread on my carpc project, which is coming along nicely. Any comments on the build is genuinely welcome.

The main aim of the build was to: be as removable as possible to transfer to my next car with as little damage to car and PC as possible. To cost as little as possible using the bits and bobs I have left over.

------------ The Kit ----------------

The Car - Suzuki Swift 2006

Power - M2 ATX 150w ish DC-DC power supply. Cost - £42 from linitx

Screen - Just bought a 7" Single Din motorized screen off ebay for around £200, it's touch screen but doesn't include an amp

Sound Pioneer head unit with rear Aux, also means i can take out pc for maintenance and i've still got tunes - cost - £66

Accessories - Needed double facia adaptor (£40) and ISO multistalk adaptor (£30)

The Shuttle

The computer itself - Shuttle XPC SN456V2

AMD Athlon 3000+,
512 + 256mb DDR Ram,
40GB HD
Nvidia 128mb 5600XT graphics card.
Dual Layer DVD-RW drive.

cost - free. (it's been in my house unused for four years, since I went Mac it lost its use)

The Box

For the sad stationary people out there - It's a 9litre 'Really Useful Box' available widely on the high street, such as larger WHsmiths and Staples - about £6.

Stage 2
------------------

I installed the double din adaptor, the head unit (a pioneer) and now the screen. A motorized single din from eBay

Obviously I need to remove the crap on the vents as this is where the screen will flip to.

Stage 3

Sorted my not-so-glamorous mounting soluting for my Shuttle PC. (no damage to shuttle, no drilling to the swift) I bought a good make, plastic storage box, which turned out to be the perfect size. It's got a space all the way around the edge to allow some ventilation. Sticky-back velcro'd the bottom of the storage box - this prevents the box and pc from moving about, but means i can remove easily when I need to do some maintenance. There are two perfect screws at the front of the shuttle case that I've been able to use to attach the shuttle to the plastic storage box. So it's all secure.

It doesn't look pretty, particularly cos I've dremmil'ed the plastic box to within an inch of it's life - but no lasting damage to swift or PC case.

Two trusty motherboard riser screws to lift the thread at the same size as the rubberized feet:

Ignore the blanking plate being bent in it's just because I pushed it to hard when taking the photos. As you can see if I did put a DVD drive in there would be enough room for the tray to eject, (it would mean remounting the PSU though)

Stage 4

Sorting the PC power supply - I had to remove the old power supply before fitting this one - I also had to remove the DVD drive as this is occupying the DVD space

Stage 5
-----------------

Laying the cables: The VGA cable, the USB input cable, Aux sound cable and spare USB cable (for a friends iPod or pen drive to connect) all laid from the PC in the boot and connected to the screen and Pioneer Head Unit. All these laid down the passenger side of the car.

7 Core trailor cable - laid down the drivers side of the car.

There you can see the 4 cables: video, spare USB, USB for touch screen and Aux going to head unit:




This will be the spare USB cable to hook up to a friends iPod - coming out of the glovebox

NEXT STEPS -

+ Getting the thing wired in for power
+ Hopefully get the OBDII interfaced wired in
+ Think about using the quick-cam for rear-view camera - not very subtle though
+ Need to think about a microphone for the hands free phone calls
