I dont get it.... I drive a big gaint SUV with a big V8. Im 100% sure i'm not compensating for something, I would have to put a V16 engine in mine to get to that point.

As far as you Trip, you didnt take a picture of the whole thing (its like you focused on the cover with that catch phrase).... I see a gap that can fit the battery. its on the lower right hand side!

PS: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, why did they put that on your engine Trip. OMFG Im crying so bad from laughing. "Displacement on Demand?????". Take a Dremel and take that off. Is that what you were talking about chunkyks? I have never in my life saw a catch phrase put on a engine before. Must be a GM thing.

Displacement On Demand or DoD/AFM is when the engine shuts down 4/8 cylinders under lighter loads. It's one way I get to drive a V8 and still get nearly the fuel economy of a 4 banger. When I hit the gas a little, it's like I get an extra gear and a crapload of power when the other 4 cyls turn on.

So it's not just marketing, its actually a feature that saves money. I actually want to tap into the GMLAN and see if I can force activate it deactivate it at will. Driving below 15mph will always have you in 8 cyl mode so the exhaust sounds good when you drive by the "homies" at low speeds. I'd rather idle with 4cyl if I could.

As far as the battery goes... I'd rather not modify anything in the engine bay because I'm really not the kind of person that could do it without screwing something up and ending up in the shop. Plus, I need additional room to mount the relay and the fuses. And if I decide to throw in a turbo, etc later on, i still have a little room to do it.

I know what it is, but why stick it on the engine. I dont think Dodge stuck that on their displacement on demand engines.... I cant even remember what they call it. Does it really work though? I mean the impala is a big car. I would think going from a V8 to a 4 banger would still use alot of gas because the 4 banger now has to pull a heavy a$$ car.

Still looks odd on the engine.

An update on in-car power consumption for the sheeva...

I just redid my install and killed my POL 5v linear power supply. So for a week I ran it with a power inverter and the original power supply. I didn't do any current measurement, but I do have voltage monitoring through my fusion brain. What did I find? With the inverter, I was actually running more efficiently! With the linear supply, throughout an 8 hour school + practice day, I would get to my car and it would be around 11.5 volts. With the inverter I would be around 12.1!

The replacement power supply I ordered is a switching regulator capable of 50 watts at 5 volts. With this, I end up around 12.4 volts. I guess that linear regulator constantly sitting at 110 degrees wasn't so efficient hahah

I wish I had actual amperage figures to show.

Well, if you consider the v8 outputs 303hp. Let's say that's cut in half so maybe 151hp... probably more than enough to pull a big car like the impala. It helps a lot when you are cruising at a set speed for a period of time. The laws of physics tend to keep you in motion and all the engine has to do is compensate for wind resistance. Going up any incline though, you have to give it more gas which will kick all 8 cyls on.

Also, you'd also be surprised, the impala is big, but it's not that heavy. The 2010 Camaro actually weighs more.

I didn't know dodge had such a feature. I suppose it's like putting "Hemi" or "V-Tec" on the engine to advertise the engines features to those who care to look them up. I guess it's all about giving the owner warm fuzzies that his engine is somehow more special.

I put up some numbers on my page about it, too: http://icculus.org/obdgpslogger/sheevap5v/

I ended up with a poor man's heatsink, which is working pretty well; I put ~4" 12G stranded copper wire into an eye connector, and then stripped the plastic off. Then put the eye hook on the screw holding the hot bit of the p5v to the exterior of the sheeva case.

I also have a mini-box DCDC USB that I'm going to replace the p5v with, that doesn't require cooling at all. I need to write the unix command voodoo for it, already, though :-|

And as far as trip compensating goes, he was putting a picture of his car with eight cylinders and five and a half liters of displacement immediately after my engine. [The difference is that trip's car also weighs a thousand pounds more than mine does :-)]

It's extremely powerful and extremely efficient and runs a full linux operating system.
This is perfect for an always on setup. In my setup it maintains constant 3G connection and acts as a internet gateway on my in car network. Through my wireless router that means wifi for all. It controls my fusion brain and also does gps tracking. I can send it requests through the internet/text messages to do things. That's it in a nutshell. Kev has similar goals from what I can tell.
