What about a small solar panel in your rear windshield? Adafruit has 6V models on sale this week (I bought one myself).

Those panels are hardly worth the money. They do 6 volts at 200ma, for 1.2 watts. I would need two of them in series to work with the car's 12 volt electric system so I would get 2.4 watts for 50 bucks. Regardless, 2.4 watts would only extend my time a few hours. Total draw while the car is off is nearly 20 watts. I should probably just work on the efficiency of my existing setup... like killing the USB devices on the PC when it's off. No matter what measures I take to extend battery life, I will still have the auto-start on low voltage feature as a backup.

PaulF. Just wanted to say I still love this project and despite what other ppl say. Keep on going!!!
After all 50% percent of those on this forum might actually buy the finished solution of what they want, instead of building a CarPC... But. The same 50%ers have the same mentality... "Because I can"

Like me... I could have bought a MKIV navigation unit/computer to my E46, and then hook up a iPhone/Pod intergration kit, and actually have everything I need... Still, I'm going with a CarPC approach because.... I CAN!

Kinda surprise by some people's attitudes to this, 'why do this, why do that'.... why put a computer in a car?'

Strive forward my good man, at the very least as a proof of concept.... actually, of several.

A lot of these features are already out there.
With my Compustar alarm it will lock/unlock the doors depending on my distance to the vehicle. My friend has the new BMW X5 where the door unlocks when he puts his hand near the handle, not sure how they did that. And also if he shuts the door but it doesn't close all the way, it'll actually pull itself shut.
