I think you owe us some pics!!!! (pssst- the all metal version of it)
Couple more pictures here:
Meanwhile, just came back from Lake Tahoe last week. Using the iPad as my main carputer. Love the Wikihood app, that opens a wikipedia article around the neighborhood your're at.
Very cool app. This is better than any travel guide. Still struggling with the brightness control, the iPad's auto brightness setting does not work as it should (max during day time, very very low at nighttime, specially when driving.). Hopefully an iPad front end app will take care of this.
Fantastic- that bracket looks very strong. Nice the way the IPAD is "now you see it-now you don't" when not it use! I'm sure someone can help with the brightness issue; I haven't got a clue.
First off I would have to say that you are definitely a hobbyist. Multiple computers and installing them with mounts is not my cup of tea, but whatever your need dictates I guess. I love the ingenuity of the slide up computer from your arm rest. Very neat.
BTW, very nice SUV.
Thanks for all.
As for being a hobbyist, aren't we all? :-)
Very impressive. That's quite a bit of work you put in there! Since it seems as if you've moved to the iPad as your primary, are you planning on ditching the dash mounted unit?
Not quite yet. I have plenty of room for computer stuff in the truck, so that's not my main concern.
Funny enough, wife suggested me to get rid of it! She asked me if I could do 4 cams around the car a la Infiniti QX/FX ("around view"), I said, sure, and there was it, carte blanche. But I'm having second thoughts.
For one, the OEM Bluetooth implementation works VERY WELL (not perfect, but close enough). I have yet to find a carputer solution that works well everytime. So if I remove the OEM NAV, I lose not only the nav (not that big deal), but also the 4CD mp3 changer, the rear entertainment center control and the BT. So that has to stay.
The tablet/car pc has to be an addition. That's why I'm using the almost 20in wide center console, and may use the overhead console too. :-)

Looking good! You got lots of time and lots of mula to dump into this project ;)
okay very exciting times. Just got a new tablet pc a couple of weeks ago, the Lenovo X201t, with Corei5 processor. Transflective Boe-Hydis screen, multi-touch screen - it looks BETTER than the iPad under sunlight conditions, no glare. Best screen I've ever seen. 12.1", 1280x800, can't wait to start skinning again!
I also got a Coby Kyros 7024 to use as my headrest screen today. It's charging right now. Post more about it in the days ahead. So I have the iPad hooked up, the tablet pc as the boss, and now the Coby tablet running Android 2.2 as a headrest screen (if it works, I'll buy more).
Tablet car, Gizmo? Turbo? I'm going to beat you guys. iOS, Win7 and now Android...Tablet car...LOL...the challenge will be to make them all talk to each other, but that's the fun part! (love this hobby).
