As far as screen options go, search! Find something that falls in your price range and meets what you need and do a little searching on the forums. It's all been answered before.
    You'll need VGA/USB.

ok ok found one that I think fits the description of what im looking for

    http://www.short-circuit.com/product...l#ReviewHeader

will this give me the capabilities of what im looking for?

    back to my previous question,

will i be able to have both the car pc and original head unit running side by side?
the way i have it is when the carpc is running it blocks off the head unit anyways but when i have a quick drive down to the office i want to just flick on the head unit and listen to the radio
    possible?

also are their programs to allow me to run the radio antenna to my car pc?

    A

OMG.... I remember when I had a budget of $600.00. Now I think ive spent almost $4,000!

Well anyways, I do business with Short-Circuit and have bought their VM70 series screens. I am also buying the VMI70 (the screen you linked to). I will tell you it the same as the VM70, but obviously fits in a single din space. There are some flaws with the screen though. Number 1 issue, the gears are made of plastic, so over the years the gears start to break down and the screen will not open over time. Number 2, the screen has this weird wobble issue. If the screen is not supported from the back when opened, and you press the touchscreen the screen will push backwards and forward. Eventually overtime this till cause the screen to not open fully. Other then those 2 issues, the screen is fine. I am going to be buying 2 of these screens because I have no choice. I need a screen that folds into a single din form factor. What I plan to do though, is investigate maybe replacing the gears with metal ones in the future. Now to prevent the wobble, simply add a piece to you dash that sticks out a little, kinda like with doors. You know the little metal thing with rubber that prevents the door from hiting the wall and breaking it. That should work.

it came with this hdmi to dvi thingy but im still lost on how to get it to connect to a vga

It depends, is that HDMI to DVI converter, converting it to DVI-A or DVI-D. If its DVI-A, then you buy the cheapy DVI to VGA connectors http://www.antonline.com/p_F2E4261-GP_37925.htm. Now if its DVI-D, which most DVI ports for HDTVs are, then you would need this. http://www.hdfury.com/. I had to use the HDFURY. It basically converts the DVI-D into something the VGA can use. Its pricey, but the only way to do it. Just pray its not DVI-D. The unit cost me $115.00.

Because DVI-A is analog. DVI-D is pure digital.

That converter does put them all together. If our screens had DVI native on them, we wouldn't have to use the converter, but because they are simply VGA, we have no choice. In fact this converter isn't even for the PC, its actually for the screen. Basically it converts the screen to DVI-D.

The reason they do this is because a lot of people are using their computers with their HDTVs now. DVI-D is common on these TVs. Unfortunately our screens in the car, are not all that common, so we have to use that converter to make it pure digital. Trust me, i know its a kick in the @$$. I was pi$$ed when i had to buy it also. Just remember though, this is a uncommon hobby we are in, so we have to use uncommon equipment sometimes to get it to work the way we want.

Shop on EBAY, I am sure someone has it for less. Also I bought mine 2 years ago, the price may have dropped.

I've been interested in making something very JARVISy, after reading about the guy who did so with a Mac mini and some RFID tags over on lifehacker.

Is JARVIS that home PC with the guy with the little dog. That setup is very impressive. A Car PC version would be really hot.

Guy with the little dog? I dunno, I was referring to the movie version of Iron Man, wherein the butler Jarvis has been replaced with a seemingly omnipresent computer system.
