    Mercedes E320 2000 - On Board J.A.R.V.I.S.

    Project #1
    mercedes benz E320 year 2000
current features-steering wheel functions, 2 DIN radio/climate control area

installation goal-minimum 7 inch touch screen with the basic media playing capabilities, ability to connect to the cars OBD and see updates such as gas, door open, low washer fluid, remote start, voice command system, web browser

Budget-as of now, i am planning on doing all labor myself so that leaves parts that i dont have a total budget of $600(minimum)

im basically sold on using a windows system.

Before i start looking for a mother board to start with I'd like some direction if the above goals are practical.

    hoping to get started asap.
    thanks

At least you said $600 (minimum) - some come on here thinking $600 (maximum) and end up spending twice as much.

    7inch touchscreen, standard.
    Multimedia playback, standard.
OBD, some people do it, some don't. Easy enough.

Step one is going to be reading through the FAQ's on this site. They're not your typical FAQ list - they're helpful and will give you some direction.

Are you keeping your headunit? Are you removing your headunit?
That could be your step one - because either choice will take you down a different path. Gives you different things to consider.

If you're removing your headunit now you have to factor more power for the AMP, so that means bigger power line - also means you have to figure out whether you're doing onboard audio, or external sound card, or how you're doing your audio - what will you be happy with.

If you're keeping your headunit (like my install) you have to figure out how you're going to get audio to the headunit. This for me meant the purchase of a special adapter to use factory aux - this also means less power draw to me, but not as integrated of a setup.

Then you have to decide where you're placing your touchscreen. Are you going to fabricate it yourself? Do you have the skill set to fabricate it yourself? I didn't/don't so I sent mine out to be fabricated for me.

Each decision will have an impact on your budget as well. It could be only a $10 stereo mini cable, or it could be a $100 fabrication, or a $200 AMP - or more.

Are you going to use Centrafuse, Ride Runner, or something else for your front end?
Are you going to go Atom with a super small case, or go desktop processor with possibly a larger case? Where are you going to mount your case?

This thread might have been better in a different location if you're just at the planning stage. Usually worklog section is for when you've started work, and know the majority of your paths. As you work on it - you could change direction - like me.

I wanted to replace the stereo with the CarPC entirely. But I couldn't do that without some high dollar fabrication. I didn't want that route so I opted for a less expensive install route. I'm still happy with my choice - but it was something that I didn't figure out until I had gone from choosing to remove headunit and looking at fabrication.

There's a link in my signature to the FAQ. I highly suggest it, it will help give you some direction.

Not sure exactly what you mean by this^^^

Not sure yet as to which front end program i want to use, i want to get hardware down before i start specifics of software.

Would you mind taking a look at this mini-desktop?

The current stereo in your car, are you keeping that or removing it entirely? If you remove it entirely and replace it with just the CarPC you will need to get the audio from the PC to the car's speakers somehow. Here is the link to the FAQ entry regarding this. I suggest reading it. (Along with visiting the FAQ link in my signature)

Centrafuse is more grpahic intensive than other front ends. If you end up wanting to use Centrafuse and purchase hardware that doesn't support Centrafuse you're going to regret it.

That's like buying a Mac because you like the looks then buying Windows. Yeah, you can put the two together but it would've been easier to start out with Windows compatible hardware.

It looks good, you'll likely need to start looking at the Carnetix PSU to power that. Will the 160GB hard drive be enough for music/OS/apps for you or do you think you'd do an external drive in addition to that?

I wouldnt mind keeping my original headunit(picture posted) only bc i know if i have a short drive i wouldnt bother with the pc and just flick on the radio(possible?)

Will the desktop in the link i posted have enough power to run centrafuse should i choose to run it?

Ive been looking around on the site for mechanical touchscreens that would go back into the DIN space when its not in use, leaving me access to the original headunit buttons(for radio) and as a extra protection from theft. any ideas where i can find something along those lines?

    Thanks in advance

I also got a few good leads on touchscreens to go with.

If someone can give a look and let me know if i should run away or for these, I;d appreciate it.

Only the first screen there would work with a car pc. The others are touchscreen stereos. Big difference. You could get video on them, but it'd be crappy looking. And you'd have no touchscreen capability with the computer with those...

As far as screen options go, search! Find something that falls in your price range and meets what you need and do a little searching on the forums. It's all been answered before.
