In my many years of CAR STEREO fabrication methods and techniques , differ from one company to the next , mostly because of time restraints and money. My rule of thumb is to use what method your most comfortable with and stick with it. A newer method or faster method is not always the better method for the end result . I applaud and enjoyed watching this build

    Thank you zeerific.

I was trying to make that point to a fabricator/ installer that commented elsewhere who told me I took the long way around. I KNEW that before I started and I know a pro would have to charge several thousand for this based on the hours and yes, no one would pay for this. I also know it could be done for a fraction of the cost/time with a hybrid of MDF/FG. One has to recognize the difference between doing something for yourself as a hobby and an exercise in learning versus doing it for someone else on their dime...

Hey treetop777, nice to see you around, I haven't seen you around here much. BTW, my puddle lights are still working like a champ

LOL indeed, been gone a while. I totaled the F150 the Computer was in and the Lincoln don't lend itself to an easy computer install. I'm working on an Android tablet install so i may start a worklog sometime soon (before the end of the year most likely) - stay tuned.

I smashed my "puddle" lights backing out the garage but $556 bucks later, all is well.

That's a shame that the 150 bit the dust & $556 bucks for new lights, ouch! Welcome to the world of Lincoln I guess.

I'll be watching for a work log from you.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

Been a while since I updated here but didn't really have a lot to report on.

I have been working away gradually on the software getting windows 8.1 & RR with DFX to work the way I want it. I'm fairly happy with it, but of course lots of progress to still be made.

I did want to post my progress for Robert and anyone else struggling with the Griffin Power Mate. I SEEM to have mine working now within 8.1 but I just got it working today so it may be too early top declare victory.

Here is how I did it:

-No prior install of Griffin drivers & hardware never plugged in since reinstall of W8.1

-8.1 just updated a few days ago with a very large cumulative update( KB2919355) plus a smaller update yesterday.

-Installed the Griffin drivers version 2.0.1PC dated 2011-04-27

-Plugged in the Power Mate, it worked for vol/mute under global settings immediately & to my surprise it worked while RR exe was in focus!

    - after reboot, it did not work until I manually launched "PowerMate.exe"

    - I followed these instructions to a "t": http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...pt-create.html

    - rebooted the PC, had one little error in a command line (an extra set of ") so it threw an error, but once I found the error and fixed, it has launched several times since on reboot while testing.

    - So now when the PC starts, it launches W8.1 then straight to the RR main menu and the Power Mate works instantly for Vol +/- Mute.

-Next step is to try to get it working specifically in RR to advance track in Music with a push and right turn plus advance/go back one channel with the same movement in the Sirius app.

On another note, I installed GPSGate 2.6 and it seems to be working great with 8.1 to split the GPS signal. I have Garmin fully updated and embedding in DFX perfectly. Weather is working and so is the Gauges app so I am definitely making progress.

Good deal! If i remember correctly, there are some "sendkey" commands that make the Powermate work in RR. If you can't find them, i can probably dig them up. But then again, they worked in XP, don't know about 8.1..

I also have Griffin 2.0.1PC working on my carpc. Been about 2 weeks now and it has not glitched once. Windows 7 64 bit.

What I did was to create a shortcut of the executable, and put it in the startup folder instead of setting the program to start with windows.

    Great Work PhilG
My windows 8 crashed a few weeks ago and I have not been able to get it up and running.- Well in all honesty I only tried half heartedly when I actually got in the truck to go out and could not use the CarPC.
Cant do a system restore, can't get into safe mode or anything of the sort so I was thinking it would be best to go back to windows 7 but your progress with 8.1 gives me hope.
I've always had GPSGate with 8 so I am glad to see it still works with 8.1. My only gripe was that I had installed minicam to record video with datalogging from the OBD port and GPS overlay over the video but that would not work.
I think it had something to do with the fact that there were no drivers for the 64 bit version or just no drivers for 8 but not sure at the moment.
Anyway this gives me a moment to think tha maybe I should give 8.1 a shot.

By the way how do you like RR?
I've been using Centrafuse for a bit but I am thinkin of switching FEs as I am tired of having to pay extra every few years for an update.

Ah but windows 8 did away with the start-up folder. Not sure if it was brought back in 8.1

@ treetop - Regarding the PM commands, it is the send keys that I will be looking for, not sure if they are skin specific or global within RR but I'm working with DFX

    Music:

    push+right = track forward
    push +left = restart track
    long push = toggle pause

    Sirius:
    push+right = channel forward
    push +left = channel back

If you have anything let me know, otherwise I'll start turning over the rocks to see what I can find...

    Thanks!!!

@ rray - awesome news the PM is working for you. I did the same thing, but created a task in task scheduler first and elevated the program to always have Admin rights then created a shortcut of that and put it in the start up folder.

@Dluvr22 - Unless you have an unavailable driver for Win8 that's a deal breaker, I don't see any reason to dump it. Most issues I'm reading about are caused by W8's border line paranoid level of security but once you figure out how to get everything running in Admin mode, their shouldn't be a ton of issues. I'm not saying your further ahead with 8, just that since your there, I'm not seeing any advantages to going back to W7. What I did was full backups before every major change I made, I mean full drive image...I had to use it once ....but it was easy to get everything back

I am loving RR, it's been a huge learning curve for me given I'm not strong on the software side of things but I am learning and I am getting it the way I want it. I liked the polished concept & look of CF but I found it more buggy than RR and the playlist editor was heading in a direction that was of no interest to me. I'm not interested in sitting at a PC and planning out my playlist then sending it to the truck. I wouldn't mind paying for it and I appreciate what the guys over there are doing, it's just version 3 and later went in a direction that I wasn't interested in. I think I liked version 2 the best....

edit: In hopes of getting voice commands to work in the future, I'm thinking the long push on the PM would be a great place to toggle it from.
