Congrats on the panel find! Very nice fit! Would be even greater with digital interface rather than VGA ;-) Maybe there is another controller or an adapter.

And great that the buttons probably work with my DAC's. I am currently testing my complete install, and will provide a video as soon as everything is in order. (motorcontrol with CD sensor and programmable tilt, button interface, lcd panel button emulation, and dimable led backlight)

Yea, there is a controller that'll work, it even takes in RGsB natively. Only issue is you have to program the controller for the screen you're working with and you'll need to make up a cable. Here it is. Not huge hurdles I suppose.

I've updated the first post with a working video link for the touch panel. It's very very responsive. You barely have to touch it and light transmission is fabulous. The issues I've found with it so far are edge response is not great for pressing the start button, capacitive etches are sometimes visible and you have to have a gap between the LCD and the panel.

Programmable tilt sound lovely and a good tool for sunlight readability. Looking forward to seeing your vids.

    Hi Sama

Any further updates on your project?

    Background:
I too have an E46 M3 and I'm in a similar position. I want to keep it as stock as possible. I purchased a CIS-IBUS interface that lets me run my PC output VGA directly into the 400x240 Nav screen. Not super high res and also not as sharp as the factory navigation but probably good enough for me.

I am initially using Carmedia but it seems it's no longer supported and has bugs and limitations I don't like.

So now I'm investigating just adding a touch screen to the existing navigation unit (but keeping the factory navigation LCD) since none of the frontends can be adequately driven with just the BMW controls. You say that's not really possible though.

    Hi Shonky

I do have some updates and some pics that I need to post. Time is really not on my side these days as I work away from home and only have limited time to work on this. Hopefully should get it finished this or next weekend. That's the plan anyway.

Just adding a touchscreen is possible and in fact should be easy. The bit that's not possible is to find a 6.5" capacitive one. I was lukcy and got a one-off prototype.

You can find a resistive one that you can just put on top and feed the cable through. The problem I've got now is all around getting the tilt to work with all these extra cabling I've got. I may have to cancel the CD slot for the time being until another day when I can convert all the cables into flat ones or something.

Have a look on ebay, i recall seeing a 6.5" resistive screen for $40 or so once.

I'll post my update pics soon.

any updates from Sama? Shonky, i am considering a CIS IBUS - any cons or pros? I have an E53 X5 4.6iS, with Nav, BT with VR, TV. Hope to lose the extra modules in favor of a CarPC. I did see some touch screen panels with flat cables, not sure if they are capasitor or resistor ones, they are about $50 plus $25 for a USB controller. The touchscreen is not higher priority, retaining everything stock in the front, and keeping stock functions + adding additional functions is higher priority... I was looking into CP600BMW for the MP3 player in place of the factory CD changer, but for the price (250 euros) i can get the CIS IBUS (260 euros delivered to US) and then get a separate computer (separate cost, about $450), and hopefully get rid of all the smaller modules...

MP3Car is such a huge depository of knowledge, that just searching the topics takes big chunks of free time, and free time is very limited...

    Thanks

I'm now looking to sell all my gear. Thought I'd post on here first to see if any thread followers are interested before I post out a classified.

It's a long list but here are the highlights:

6.5" custom capacitive touch panel + controller + windows driver (one-off prototype that cost over 300 alone!)
6.5" LCD 800x480 (needs a new VGA controller, I fried the one I had)
Custom board monitor buttons panel (from BES on this forum)
RGsB to VGA converter (to get BMW signal into the VGA controller)
2 x E46 Boardmonitor frames with most of the internals intact (CD player etc)
    2 x M2-ATX's
Pentium 4 + motherboard from a previous project

I'll give more details, but it's basically my last and previous projects all in a box. I'm thinking 500 + shipping for the whole lot.
