Well today I turned on the car pc with no cap and no second battery. It actually ran good. No dimming lights, no nothing. So it could have been something I was doing in the past. In fact I ran the system for almost two hours trying to get everything configured. Now of course I $h!+ my pance when I turned the key off and everything went dead, but then I remembered that I set up the wiring with a second battery in mind. The main battery disconnects via a relay. I will say this, I had hick ups that I did not like. First, my DVD rom is not recognized by the PC. I think its the cheap china adapter im using. Thankfully I have a fully native USB version, that I know works laying around. One screen has a brown tint to it. I know its not the screen itself, so it means that its a connection or worse, the KVMP. To get to the KVMP, I would have to raise the whole entire setup to reach. The new amps I bought, one has a messed up channel. So that has to go back. The DZ aspect worked as expected. The MZ, that cr@p would work at all. I have no clue why not. It turns on, then turns off.

I started having more and more issues. It was all centered around that 12V - 5V step down converter. DO NOT USE IT IN YOUR INSTALL! I have now removed it. If you battery changes in voltage, it goes crazyyyyyyyyyyy. Ive decided to just by individual 5V 2a adapters. Also I am going to go with a dual relay for controlling the screens. When I would turn one on, then the other, they both shut off. So I must have done something wrong with the diodes, so to save hassle, I am adding the dual relay. Also its not my amp that has the channel acting up.... Its actually the soundcard. I think it may be the PCI to PCIe bridge. I may have to get the PCIe version of the card. It just sucks though because I bought all the cables for it. The screen that had the brown tint now works. I think its the KVMP switch and the 12v to 5v converter.

Hi, you are correct. I mentioned this problem when I tested those 5v converters. They don’t drop off correctly if the voltage input falls below around 11v (don’t remember exactly) but they tend to pulse the output until it finally shuts down. It looks like no low voltage cut out has been incorporated.

Hi, had a look back at some notes, the lowest voltage input they will take is 10v, below that the output fluctuates all over that place from a few hundred mV up to around 4v and in some case pulses between 0 and a few volts . This could be a big problem during engine cranking. It’s a shame as they have some real grunt otherwise. The manufacturing spec basically says they only go down to around 11v however it’s that brownout condition where it doesn’t cut out cleanly that’s disappointing.

Thats what it looks like happened. The voltage dropped but it affected all USB devices. I had to quickly cut power. I just dont trust it that I pulled it out my install. So if anyone wants one, you can have it. All you par is shipping. What I did do is lurk on Amazon and saw that they sell car chargers for TOM TOM units that put out 5v @ 2amps. So each KVMP switch gets one. I tried running the PC without the KVMP switches powered and the result was huge power draw which caused devices to shut down, including the KVMP units. I feel much better with individual units powering each device. The two hubs that I needed to power will be powered by a 3 amp OPUS 5v PSU I had laying around.

Like I said, thats why Im giving mine away. I was foolish to think this would work on a Car PC with voltages varying so much.

    SOUNDMAN98..... I need your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Soundblaster Xtreme Gamer card kicked the bucket. Will not work in any PC. When I put it in my desktop I noticed an electrical burning smell, which I also smelled in the car. So the card committed suicide. So I did searching and it came down to a SB X-Fi and a Xonar. What I hated about the X-Fi is the stupid mini jacks, which forces you to buy their exclusive cables. So I went with the Asus 7.1 PCIe XONAR_DX/XD/A/90-YAA060-1UAN00Z. It uses normal 3.5 jacks. I think in the past you have tested Xonar, so I wanted to know, does it have the ability to force Stereo into 7.1 speakers like the SB X-Fi do?

oooh, i would take it except that it is only 5v output... i've got a idea that requires the 24+v model.... the voltage issue is only a problem for your install that would still work for most that keep the engine running whenever the carpc is on..

mick, i see what you mean.. i am so used to looking at automotive range devices with 5-30v input's.... it seems their lineup relies more on regulated input's....

as for your soundcard issues, i only briefly used the usb x-fi, and even more briefly used a sb gold or something(a really old model card)--and neither were used with their default software, so no idea what can/can't be done with what software is included...

Well from all the reviews, it kicks X-Fi's butt. The fact that I can also use normal cables is a big deal for me. Im sure it has the ability to fill all the speakers, since they are compared to be better then X-Fi. Only thing I hate is that it requires a floppy power plug to work. Thankfully I had a old PSU laying around.

    OK read the manual!

It has Dolby Pro-logic IIx. It will take standard stereo audio and expand it to 7.1 surround sound. I just hope it does it with line-in. I know some cards only treat the line in as stereo, no matter what. Crossing my fingers though.
