My setup is ok. I actually just wrote the last chapter on the PC... I'm going to try iPad only for a while. I'll still need something for my XM, but I'm working that out. Should have it all running tomorrow. I'll try to have some pictures. But it may not work if it draws too much power. What I am trying to have is a laptop (with the screen removed) act as a "server" for the XM(PCR) and control it over a web interface through the iPad. The bench testing looked good, but I may end up scrapping that idea if it draws too much power. I may also end up having to get a router and that may cause me to scrap it as well.

Hope you feel better, HiJackZX1. Also, wanna trade personalities? I gain weight when I get depressed or sick. But I think this is gonna work and I'll keep the weight off.
I have bad luck with vehicles...

Well I hate to say it, but it does look like the Car PC segment will have to yield to the Touch Pad segment. Right now, touch pads are on a roll. I have not been paying any attention to the iPad at all, but on the Android front, you have pads coming out with dual core processors and Android 3.0 (Motorola XOOM). The power these things are getting are insane, and always connected to the internet, its impressive. There will be a small market for Car PC for people like me, that need a complicated setup, but for average users, THE CAR PC IS DEAD, oh god, I cant believe I said that.

As far as the XM, just dump the XMPR. There is a much easier way. As you know my setup has DUAL Zones for the main system. Well one thing I wanted is that the front (me) could listen to XM throught the main speakers. Problem is that not all users are into Electronic Area, so I wanted the rear zone to be able to listen to XM also, but not be locked into the same channel. The solution (god your going to think, why didnt I think of that) was to simply download the online player for XM, called XM, activated the online service for $3.00 a month and called it a day. Since the car is always connected to the internet, I just stream it that way. So now my car has XM being streamed through hardware and through software. I wish I could dump the XM DIRECT and just use online, but only one person can be logged on a time :-(.

NOOOOO, I wouldnt want anyone to have my personality. Your a nice guy, where as, Im rotten to the core sometimes. I am not good at dealing with death though, especially my close family and dogs. So I couldnt handle it. I am slowly coming back to my rude self though. Im so rude sometimes that I dont even know im doing it. Also when I do get under weight, I get sick a lot. I have to maintain a weight of 155 or else. No if and or buts.

Best thing to do is find a work out partner. That always keeps things going. You turn the exercise into a game. Problem with me is that no one wants to work out with me, again because I can be rude sometimes, especially in areas with bunches of others working out. So I use my dogs to run with me, and now that Tobi has passed (I could run with him anymore because his age, causing all of us to have to slowly walk), I can get into again.

I do have a workout partner. We try to out-do each other. It makes things interesting... Today was the day off for the week. We start back up tomorrow. I had a chance to work on my setup today and I'm probably gonna have to get a router. I'm going to scour eBay before I completely dump the project. Ad Hoc WiFi isn't working as well as I hoped it would...

My setup isn't always connected, and to get the $3 online streaming you have to have at least one radio activated, IIRC, so dumping the XMPCR isn't really an option. Plus I have a year paid up until November... I'm just gonna have to get creative.

You do have the option of doing online only for $12.95. XM will gladly change your current subscription over. I think tinkering will be a headache, especially since there is such an easier option.

Meh. My tinkering has paid off. It took me a week, but it paid off. My next post will show you what I mean.

I demo my XMPCR server running on an uNSLUng Linksys NSLU2 with an old Linksys WRTU54G-TM T-Mobile @Home wireless router providing the wireless signal to my iPad. The NSLU2 and XMPCR are powered with a generic Chinese iPad adapter from eBay ($2) and the WRTU54G-TM is powered with my Lilliput screen's regulated 12V cigarette lighter power supply.

This video was shot with my new video camera. Previously I have used my Kodak V1003 and the shutter noise is audible. The whining noise in the video is my truck running. It's loud when it is cold.

So what if you are not in range of the network? Does it work if you tether it with your iPhone?

What do you mean by "tether?" Right now it only works if I'm in range of the network. Any device can connect if they have my WEP key. But if the NSLU2 (the server) gets more than one request at a time, the Perl back end causes the CPU utilization to hit 100% and that triggers an auto-reboot. So it's not perfect, but it is functional. Functional enough for me, anyway. It gets the job done like I want it to.

If you compare my last video, you'll notice that the logos were kind of a last-minute addition. I realized that I wouldn't exactly be able to read the text at a glance while going down the road, so I decided that ripping the logos from the XM SkyDock app would work since it was designed to run the SkyDock on an iPhone or iPod Touch while in a vehicle. I wanted to put OpenWRT on the WRTU54G-TM (the router), but it isn't supported. If I could have put OpenWRT I could have eliminated the NSLU2 because the SIM card slots on the router are on the built-in USB lines, and I could have hacked in a couple USB ports to serve the XMPCR and the flash drive that houses all of the programming. (Built-in memory is only 8MB, barely enough for firmware... 1GB flash drive gives me plenty room to breathe.

What I meant to ask is say you connect your iPad to a mobile device for internet (3g, 4g, not wifi) can you still access the XM server?

I probably could connect my iPad to the built-in 3G and tether it to the router and have like a DynDNS setup or something so I could access it like that, but I haven't the slightest idea how to do it...
