So, my new plans are finished. I thought of something that will work all the way around (once I have the money to do it, that is... College is so financially draining! Hopefully my job working with the campus IT guys goes through, I can use the extra money...).

I am going to resurrect my old CarPC (it's currently my desktop PC, but being as I just got a new Intel i3 laptop and 1TB external HDD, I see no need for an older (read: single core) desktop) and steal the 16 GB SSD out of my testing PC (I have an older PC that I test various new software on) for it.

Then I'll install Windows XP (with the XPe mods) and put a VNC and an SSH server (so I can see the desktop and control it through an SSH session from my iPhone or iPad). Next I'll install WinALDL (the OBD1 software for my truck. I still need the cable, but it's $70... unless I can build the serial cable?) and set it up so I can launch it with my iPad with an (yet to be written) app that will execute a shell script over an opened SSH session, then close the session.

I'll set up Activator on my iPad to auto-launch that app that does the script and then open my VNC client and connect so I can see my ALDL (OBD1) data.
Then I can use Spotify, Pandora, or my iPod app.

    *Deep breath*

Anyone think it will work? I really don't want to mess with Centrafuse or RR anymore. I just need a "middle man" to intercept and interpret the ALDL data for me.
Maybe I can build the cable without burning up the transistors and just spend $15...

I built that circuit/cable just now. It took me about an hour. I have yet to test it to see if I burned any of the transistors up (hopefully not).

I tested the cable. It didn't work. I checked the transistors (DMM in diode testing mode) and they're good. Double checked the circuit, it's wired right. So I have no freaking clue what the problem is. I even opened HyperTerminal to read the incoming data stream and there's nothing. So it looks like I'll have to break down and order the cable once I get settled in at college and save a little money. *insert rage face here*

On another note, my work study got cancelled for some reason. They're gonna get a phone call on Monday because it shouldn't be cancelled... Oh, well. I'm sure I can get a job either way. Still gotta pack up though.

Thats not a bad thing. I usually try to build stuff to and fail big time. I remember I bought the TPMS kit and the board and I bricked it. Later decided to just buy the completed kit from Lok. Only thing I seam to be good at is building out of MDF. Anything else though I seem to break. I think its all because of self confidence issues.

Well, I ordered the cable. Hopefully it's here on Wednesday... I am almost done with cleaning up my room. Then I can start packing. If I can get that done in time, I'll be able to get the CarPC rebuilt and reinstalled. I still have all the wires, I believe. If not, I have the diagrams to solder wires in. I got a new (cooler) soldering iron and the thinnest/finest solder I could find.

While going through some of my old computer parts, I found a USB Iomega ZIP 100 drive and 5 (blank) disks. I remember I got it because I had a boot disk for my fat PS2 that was supposed to let me use a ZIP drive as a memory card, but it never worked... But it works on my new laptop. Hmm... It ought to be enough to hold encrypted reports (encrypted so no one will steal them...), right?

Got my ALDL cable today (or yesterday?) haven't had a chance to test it though. I'm moving tomorrow (or is it today? ). I'm going to college. Hopefully it all works out from here. Got the A/C compressor fixed ($775) but I haven't been able to see if my check engine light still comes on or not. Hopefully I can get this new cable to work and realtime log some data on the trip tomorrow and find out what's going on if it does come back on...

Well, I need to find a decent ALDL logging/dash program. I made it to college fine, but I had to pull over twice because the truck kept wanting to overheat... The check engine light still comes on too. Same code... 32 - EGR

My room mate should be here soon. I'm already moved in, the motherly unit has left to go back to BFE, and I'm here, freezing my ****s off. It rains a lot more here than it did back ome, butI'll adjust. I have a couple friends here already, and they're helping me find the "hot spots" and help me adjust. I've yet to meet to two guys my room mate and I will be sharing a bathroom with, but that will be remedied as soon as my room mate gets here. Right now I'm using my USB TV Tuner card to watch TV and my refrigerator, microwave, and coffee pot are on a long extension cord because I had to put them in the closet. The TV cable runs from the coax port in the closet across the "hallway" (such as it is...) and is duck taped down so I don't get yelled at by the RA (Room Adviser). So far, so good.

As soon as things kick off and I have my time mapped out, I will be restarting the TruckPC project. For now though, it is on hold.

Good luck! What are you going for?

You're truck's come a long ways from the beginning, hope you get that CEL fixed, seems like every time you do something you get that light!

I'm wondering if it's just an electrical short or something... I'm going for Information Technology. So far, we've had some sort of party (school-sponsored so no booze) every night. Tomorrow we're going to have our own personal carnival from the sound of things.

You know, I just realized that I have/had a similar issue. Every 3 months it seems, the check engine light came on and says its the fuel system evaporation control. The way I fixed it was by replacing the gas cap, lol. Hasn't come on since. As far as the over heating, maybe you should get a lower thermostat for the engine. I know mine stock came with a 185 degree thermostat, and when I took the clutch fan out (I got tired of the tank sound on start ups), I had to get a lower thermostat to make up the difference. Now it has a 160 degree thermostat. Just in case you dont know, the thermostat is a valve in the engine. When the tempature hits its spot, the thermostat opens up allowing water to circulate 100% through the engine. When it gets lower then its tempature, it closes, cutting off the circulation. Now if yours is faulty, then that would cause over heating.
