I've considered low powered atom devices and they still consume too much power compared to the igep. The Intel moorsetown platform would be nice, but you really can't get it as a hobbiest for a reasonable price. Also, the s5 screen is too small.

well being that a garmin unit is 4.3" screen and seems to be the standard. the s5 is 4.8" and i would be using as such my big screens can stream from the s5, nice and close to the driver and with centrafuse or another front-end i see only good things with the s5, as for price, well i think most have spent that much or more on the separate components we now have, and its using the dual core 520 atom, i could also see using an inteligent power supply for weeks of use without starting the vehicle, basically a timer would be all thats needed SNO

4.8" is too small for me. I really, really like 7". I'd even like bigger, but I want to be able to fit it in my dash without some custom fabbing... And the atom 520 consumes more electricities in the cpu alone than the entire igep platform does (give or take a watt...).

Don't get me wrong, my approach isn't the only approach. The s5 is a very good option. But none of the atom platforms I could get reasonably meet the power requirements for an always-on system.

The grand total for components I have listed is about $600. It's only $499 without the boomzbox.

EDIT: if it looks like the one in the pic, it might work, needs to have a male dvi end though...

I just snagged a cheap hdmi-dvi cable on amazon. I'll try that out see if it works.
I took a look at the pins, it looks like it can be used for any DVI port, whether its DVI-A, DVI-I, or DVI-D. Basically all the pins are there.

Here is the photo of the USB card, so the adapter is opposite to the DVI port shown. I think that means the adpater is male then?

    need a better cable solution!

i think i may try the header route:

The cable takes up way too much space.

I'm looking into connecting directly to the headers on the board...

Just an update... the igepv2 1GHz version is now out and the expansion board is also out. What's interesting about the expansion board is it comes with connectors for a seiko 7" touchscreen. This would eliminate the large hdmi cable and the lcd controller board (the igep becomes the controller board). This saves a *lot* of room.

Here's a pic of the expansion board with igep mounted:
